In reply to: NextGEN Gallery: Will not create new galleriesAnyone?
Could you be a little more specific with the fix for this? I had to restore my NGG tables from a backup after a botched upgrade where I accidentally deleted the tables. I lost about half of my galleries, but was happy to replace what I could from a backup.
I too lost the ability to create a new gallery and to upload pictures into the old galleries after replacing those tables.
As with the rest of you, the new galleries folders were created on the server, but they were not created within NextGen so I couldn’t add anything.
What specifically in the database needs to be changed so I can add galleries again?
Thanks!Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Theme options will not saveIn my particular case, I was able to finally confirm with the theme designer that the version of the theme I was using was not compatible with the new version of WordPress. I went in a different direction after learning this, so never discovered if there was an “in theme” fix to the problem.
Do check that you don’t have any cache programs/plugins running. I have had experience where they prohibited settings changes. Baring that, try to contact the theme designer and see if there are any known issues. Sorry I can’t be more help.

In reply to: WordPress 3.0 custom background color selectorThanks for the response. I’ve never submitted a ticket before, but did so at your advice. The ticket number is #14152 (https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/14152)
As I mentioned there, I am personally on a Windows Vista 64 Home Premium computer using Internet Explorer 7. The server is a GoDaddy delux linux hosting package. I used their automatic installation tool to install WordPress 3.0, as I usually do.
Nothing disabled that I know of…no special settings. No other noticeable problems with general web work. Most of my sites are still in 2.8.5, one in 2.9.2.
What I have noticed now is that if I click on “save changes” even with all the additional #’s, the correct color will show. Apparently this isn’t a major problem, but it’s one of those weird things that might be better off being mentioned. While it’s not affecting anything now, whatever is creating it might affect something in the future.

In reply to: Conditional tags not workingThanks for the response.
Indeed, changing to the default theme, but keeping all plugins active, allows the code to work.
Furthermore, in a cleaner installation of the theme on another server, the same problems arise. ie. Placing conditionals in the footer do not work regardless of the type. Placing them in the sidebar work, so long as they do not reference (is_home). I did realize that by using (is_category) in the sidebar that the desired occurance would take place both in category archives and on the home page. It’s thinking the home page is a category archive.
I’m guessing we have determined that it is the theme code causing the issue. Any ideas what, on a theme level, could be disrupting the code from working?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

In reply to: Anyone using 2.7 and Godaddy and site runs slow after upgrade?I’ve hosted wordpress installations on Godaddy for years and have never had a problem with the exception of the occasional lag in phpmail.
Over this weekend, I was working on one site when everything started slowing way down…on every wordpress installation on the shared linux server. Static html or images load fine, anything php dies a horrible death. It’s taking from 15 seconds to a minute and a half to load a page.
I deactivated everything I was working on on the one site, but still, changing something on one site shouldn’t slow them all down, should it? Could it?
Godaddy phone support says everything is fine and it must be the wordpress.
Add me to the list of really peeved people right now.
GDhosting: I’m going to write you and see if we can work together.

In reply to: Contact Forms not sending emailI have been able to utilize the SMTP mail settings with Cform to get it to work, but it takes 20 minutes for the content to be sent and I’m still uncomfortable with why the php mail utilization would suddenly stop working. Makes me think there is a bigger issue, so I am still soliciting opinion and help.
In the meantime….
If you are using cformsII, go to “global settings” and check the box for using an SMTP settings.
Set the server address to “relay-hosting.secureserver.net” (I assume you are on Godaddy as well)
Use “no” for “secure connection”.
Use port 25.
Leave the username and password for authentication blank.
Back on “form settings” and “core email options” make sure the “from” email address is an address created and used by Godaddy..not a hotmail, gmail, yahoo account etc. The admin address can remain as such, however. That lets it work for me, but as I said, I would still rather have the original way work as it is faster and I believe less prone to “weirdness”.
FYI to anyone who wishes to help… I have verified the paths in abspath.php and cforms.js. I have tested the php mailer function by utilizing a generic form using gdform.php and it works. I just don’t know what else to do or what settings to test. This has always worked as a default installation so now I’m at a loss of what would need to be changed. Anyone who can walk me through this would have me in their debt.
Cheers,

In reply to: Categories vs Links vs Link CategoriesArgh. ??
Here’s the issue. Whatever the case/version may be, and whatever the terminology may be, here is as specific as I can get. If this doesn’t work, I’m just going to put my links in a page and be done with it.If I create a category, say “my category”, by going to Manage –> Categories, that is all good.
Now, if I go to make a Post under Write –> Write Posts, that new category is an option as a category to place the post in.
So too if I go to add a link under Blogroll –> Add Link is that new category available.
HOWEVER; if I first make a post using the category, it no longer is listed as an available category under add link. So too is the reverse true. If I post a new link and set it to that category, it is no longer available when I write a new post.
That is annoying enough.
The second issue is that even when I create a category and place a link in it, it in no way whatsoever affects the user experience. I can create https://www.111.com and https://www.222.com as links, and they appear as such under my blogroll in the sidebar. I can create two categories and place https://www.111.com into one and https://www.222.com into the other. My blogroll continues to look the same. I can create a Parent category of “numbered websites” and place the categories containing each of the two websites under the parent category, and still, no change on the presentation.
Simply put. What the heck does putting your links in categories even accomplish? It doesn’t change or affect anything! All it does is remove that category as being available to place a post in!

In reply to: Categories vs Links vs Link CategoriesI think the “merge” you are refering to was included in 2.1.3.
I have “sucessfully” gotten the first part of my question solved. The folding categories plugin appears to work…the count of posts gets a little off, and I need to categorize a post by clicking the entire hierachy and not just it’s final destination, but it works good enough for me.
My remaining question is simply this, reposted from above:
2: My goal for Links would be to have it appear this way:
*Blogroll* – That’s the header
Radio Stations (*That’s a link category)
—radio station link 1
—radio station link 2
—radio station link 3
Friends (*That’s another link category)
—friends link 1
—friends link 2
—friends link 3
ETC.
At this point I don’t care if it collapses or not!
cheers,

In reply to: Categories vs Links vs Link CategoriesThanks for the input ccoupe.
I’m using version 2.1.3 and I believe that my theme (the popular iblue) was written for it.
I see what you’re saying about it possibly being the themes fault and that “blogroll” really is just a “category” being given special treatment.
I just can’t figure out the logic behind creating a category if then I have to decide if it is a “post category” or a “link category”. Once I choose, the category disappears in the other. There must be some differentiation there on a core level. Plus, a “normal” category doesn’t give you the option to make it a link, or href it somewhere.
This was all a little off topic from the original question.
Regarding “does anyone care”, I do only from the standpoint that I want links to other sites on my site…both due to friends and due to the actual purpose of the site.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Categories vs Links vs Link CategoriesThank you for responding. Yes, too many questions at once, but all sort of related. ?? The terminology is also killing me.
1: I will search for a plugin. I didn’t know if it would be easier to do it that way or if it was a function capability I was missing in the basic core. Thanks.
2: My goal for Links would be to have it appear this way:
*Blogroll* – That’s the header
Radio Stations
—radio station link 1
—radio station link 2
—radio station link 3
Friends
—friends link 1
—friends link 2
—friends link 3
ETC.3: I phrased this question horribly…I’ll try again in a second.
However, in your post you said that “once a category is created you can use it either for posts or links…or both.”
Actually, I’ve found that if I create a category, and assign a post to that category, it is no longer available as a link category. The reverse is also true.
To rephrase the question:
My posts will be given three categories…contributor, issue, and radio station.
Since I also desire to have links to all the radio stations, do I need to both create every station as a category AND a Link, or once I have them under links can I assign a link to a post and thus only have to enter all the stations once. grrr. sometimes I just want to pick up a phone! I hope that makes more sense.Cheers for helping,

In reply to: Where is my content stored? Now, now people. No infighting while helping me. ??
gfindlay:
I went to school in Swansea, Wales. My biggest embarrasement while there was that most peoples experience with American television and culture was the Jerry Springer show. PLEASE I beg you, do not assume that nonsense on the rest of us!
Both:
I think the problem has taken care of itself. Since my last post I have come home from work, and now the wp-content/uploads folder does exist with the one image in it that I put there.
Good to learn that pictures added to a post need to go through the “upload box” in order to be consistant. Simply linking in the post with the “picture button” apparently doesn’t work. This is the second time something weird has happened tonight. I changed the permalink structure to something more “pretty” and all the links to pages stopped working. Understandably so. Then I suddenly lost all access to the site. No pages, no ftp access, no nothing. I even called my hosting company to make sure they weren’t down. They weren’t. During the call, suddenly everything came back up, and the pages that weren’t working suddenly were with the new “pretty” addresses. I guess WordPress shut down in order to “reorder” my posts? Creepy. But it works, so no harm done.
Damn I’m long winded….Thanks for the help guys… (well, guy and gal…) ??

In reply to: Where is my content stored? Thanks gfindlay, that helped, but led to another question!
The “virtual” description works for me. I’m used to “physical” or “object” structures and not just database entries, but I understand.
Using the “file upload box” helped fix one problem I didn’t realize I had. I had a picture in a post, and it would show up on the “home” page, but when I clicked into the post to leave a comment, the image was gone. (just the box and an X…the link has spontaneously changed to a non-existant file).
I tried another post, and used the upload box, and now the image appears in both places, which is good. It even tells me now that the file is located in “wp-content/uploads/2007/07/logo.jpg”.
So it works.
But I still don’t have a wp-content/uploads folder!
This is weird. Any ideas?
Thanks again.
