I can confirm on other sites I have setup recently yes, the subcategories do display.

I have tried disabling all plugins, and even switching to the 2017 theme and still no luck.

The products are just in the subcategory.

I am not trying to display products in the parent categories, there are no products in them just subcategories in a few.

Ie: Category 1 (subcategories only) -> Category 2 (contains subcategories only) > Category 3 (Contains products).

I wound up deleting it in the database, it has not caused any issues so far.

Just because I have not had any issues, I strongly encourage anyone to proceed with caution doing this.

It’s been a little over a month now with no issues.

I still have not figured this one out, it kind of went on the back burner for me as it’s not messing with the functionality of the site, just annoying. It probably happened during an update and I just didn’t notice.

I did notice some errors in my apache error log as well

Hello all, this was due to a rewrite rule. I have /wp-content re-writing to /content via htaccess

the fix was:

define(‘WP_SITEURL’, ‘https://’ . $_SERVER[‘HTTP_HOST’] . ‘/’);
define(‘WP_CONTENT_URL’, WP_SITEURL . content);
