I forgot that i made my own version of the default template, and i guess some resent plugin updates trigger some error in my version. So nothing wrong with the plugin itself ??

I solved it, the reason was a plugin i use for rearranging the admin menu.

Yes i can confirm this. I tried several installations with WP 4.8 and Twentyseventeen, after i updated the theme to the latest one this problem began.
It seems like it happens when i edit an image the 2’nd time

First of let me remind you that i’m not talking about at normal dropdown-menu, but a dynamic menu stucture
So lets say i’m using css, i still would need to to know what branch to show and hide, hence i would need to modify the css on the fly either by php or javascript

I know i could solve my problem with javascript, but would like to try a server-side version

yes that i do know, but i need the depth to be variable, how do i know the level and branch for the selected item?

its more or less my own theme using the cherry framework 3.x

well i’ve had a look at wp_nav_menu and how to extend it, but i dont know how to cut branches of, and also how to stop the expansion at a given level

I have to point out that the old site is not wordpress but build in a CMS we made on our own

Yes i tried that one as well but it could not give access rights for anyone but the main administrator. So i have actually given up on this one.

i have tried that plugin but it didn’t solve my issue, i didn’t try the pro version though, and reading about the extended features of User Role Editor doesn’t indicate that it will solve my issue. I would like to fix this problem without adding another plugin.
