Dear Mika, I have not received any mails yet from mail.ru after I posted this. Perhaps it needed some time. I did not dare disable any other security plugins like ip geo block and wordfence.

I have the same problem. I register manually but the New User Registration – For User doesnt work.
The other New User Post registration does work.
But then the welcome mail from wordpress itself is coming shortly after that.

Very confusing for the users to receive 2 emails that we cant embed into 1 after registration. currently on wordpress 4.8.1
