    I did the plugin deactivate exercise before with no change, but this time when I deactivated them all the Visual Editor came back. Then I reactivated them one by one and identified two plugins, which, when activated, caused the editor to malfunction: NexCellent Gallery and TablePress. I can live without the NexCellent Gallery because the Risen Theme seems to have its own Gallery feature. I had used TablePress to create a nice table of documents on the main domain, but I’ll just have to find an alternative to that in the future. I don’t understand why I didn’t catch this the first time I deactivated the plugins but I’m just glad it works now. I just hope this result sticks! Thanks so much for your help.

    It was a permissions problem. I had recently moved the files to a new server and the permissions for everything got set up differently somehow. Once I gave write permission to the appropriate folders, things worked better.
