I can’t believe it. I just tried it again and this time, it worked! Perhaps I hadn’t changed my file properties. No I have them as rw-r–r– and it’s great. Both the 410.php and the 404.php in the child theme’s folder are active. Great. Thank you very much.

Much appreciate the reply and the snippet of code.

I do have a child theme so that’s no problem.

I must confess I had an ulterior motive. I wasn’t just looking to change the 404 response page. I also wanted to generate 410 errors for some pages so that the search engine crawlers remove them from their list of indexed pages. As you know, 404 just means “temporarily unavailable” so the search engines keep them in their index tables and their crawlers keep coming back to check for the same page over and over. They just keep getting flagged as errors in webmaster tools.

To overcome this I found a nice plugin that can generate a 410 error for nominated pages. 410 flags the page as “removed”. So the page gets removed from the search engine index and the crawler won’t come back for it. That plugin lets you generate a friendlier 410 error page by having your own 410.php file. They recommend copying your theme’s 404.php page in your theme’s folder and renaming it to 410.php. But “customizr” doesn’t have one. (That’s not a criticism just an explanation for using the 404.php page from another theme which led me to discover that I could use it to replace to replace Customizr’s 404 page.) Sadly, both php files get blown away when “customizr” is updated.

So my question about the 404.php file was really trying to find a way to retain a file in the theme folder across an update. I was hoping to find a way to put the files in the child theme folder and have them used from there. I realise that this is quite esoteric so I would understand if this is outside the scope of “theme support”. But just in case, I thought I would ask.

For now, I’ll keep my 404.php and 410.php files in my child theme folder and just copy them back into the theme folder after each update. A bit messy but it works.

@stunnermunya I don’t know what to recommend to you because I don’t know how you are using Shortcode Ultimate. SU is a very broad plugin with many useful tools. I stopped using it because of the way one particular upgrade was handled by the author. It left me (and a lot of others) with hidden data which could not be recovered without a lot of effort. So I opted to downgrade and keep using the old version. But that’s not viable to do for the long haul. So I looked for other plugins that performed the specific functions I needed. For example, if you want “tabs”, search the plugins that handle “tabs”. If you want “accordion” or “read more” then search for plugins with those keywords.

You should also consider your design. For example, in my view, “tabs” are not very effective in a commercial web site. My observation is that people just don’t “notice” the tabs so miss out on the data under the non-default tab. I found it better to use “longer” pages than to use tabs. People are willing to scroll down to see more data.

Sorry I can’t be more specific with my recommendations.

@stunnermunya I’m no longer using this plugin. Perhaps the author can help.

All good now with v2.0.8 I’m happy for this item to be flagged as resolved for the missing class issue. Thank you so much for the speedy response.

Me too. 2.0.7 killed my site. I was just experimenting with using emodal so I simply de-activated and the site is back up and running.

The error message I got was:

Fatal error: Class 'EModal_Migrate_Pre_V2' not found in /home/content/02/10323502/html/htbr/wp-content/plugins/easy-modal/easy-modal.php on line 212

That’s the same error as apaqui reported.

It seems the boys and girls at www.ads-software.com need to add a tab for theme’s for FAQs and documentation which permits external links. For example, on Plugins, they have an optional tab of “Other Notes” which permits an external link. Seems silly not to permit links to a documentation page on the Description tab but if those are the rules…

I agree that you’ve addressed enough of my points to warrant something nicer in the title. If I could, I’d change it to “Still room for improvement”. I think that’s fair.

Your incredible download numbers are a better reflection of what people think of your theme than any single review, especially mine. Keep up the good work.

Many thanks for addressing each point (and fixing the link in my review). I agree – I don’t know any other premium themes offering a free trial period (although that would be handy). I only mentioned this because I wanted to make it clear that my comments were on the free version and why.

You ask for suggestions on where to put the documentation link. I find it is an issue for all themes – WP doesn’t provide a standard place (that I know of). It depends on when you are looking for it, “before” or “after” installation. “After” maybe in the text of Appearance=>Themes=>Theme Details. “Before” perhaps in the codex page Description tab or in a sticky Support note. That’s where I’d look.

I understand that you’ve written the docs for the premium version but it does make it hard for users of the free version unless it is clear which features are premium only. In fact, you should see this as a selling point since you make clear what we get for the money. (Of course it’s hard to see how Revolution Slider is better just from documentation.)

I picked on your image widget because of the lack of customization for the text. I know that there are heaps of plugins that do this and provide customization. The same applies to my comments about the slider being limited to appearing at the top of the page. I know there’s lots out there that you can put anywhere on the page or sidebar. On menus, I did see where to turn off the Primary menu but could not find a way to release that vertical space (though I’m sure it can be done with CSS). BTW your Topbar does release the vertical space when not in use which is great.

I didn’t bother raising a support ticket for such a small problem as the sidebar1 issue. Easier to work around it. I have noticed that you are very prompt with your replies to support (which is part of what attracted me to try out your theme).

On the way your page templates work, I was only making the point that the two step process is quite different to most other themes. Sure it would be great if you can get ajax to dynamically change the form but I understand that this is not a trivial thing to do. Adding some page screenshots (of the finished pages) would be an invaluable addition to your docs.

I took off 1 star off because the documentation did not match what I was seeing and another star because of the sidebar fault, image plugin, slider and menu controls. Sorry if that seems a bit harsh.

Thanks for your help. As I explained, despite installing and activating your plugin, there was no file called “sitemap.xml” anywhere to be found on my web site (I even used FTP to look everywhere for it). So there was nothing to submit to GWT.

I waited for your response but after a couple of days (no criticism intended) I needed to find an alternative. I discovered that my hosting company provides a sitemap tool which did create my sitemap.xml file and I was able to get GWT to load it.

I’m not sure what went wrong with using your plugin. It certainly got good reviews but I just could not make it work for my situation.

Thanks again for the plugin and your response. Much appreciated.

Me too. I need the “restore” functionality. Here’s my experience:

I wanted to do a restore. My backup file (using pretty much the BackWPup out-of-the-box defaults) is 200Mb. On reading your web page, I tried using the Adminer plugin but that failed (presumably because it has a limit of 32Mb on the size of the import file – I’ve asked the author why he had such a tiny limit on the file size – no answer yet). phpMyAdmin has a limit of 1024Mb so I tried to import the backup file. It was being imported from my PC and that was a slow process with a file that big. After repeated attempts where the import would just “die” I had to give up. I’ve had to revert to Plan B (which was to try to fix my site another way which seems to have worked but is not really ideal).

Thanks for the great plugin. Now if only I could use it to restore my web site.

I just found a way to stop automatic WP updates. You should do this if you install qTranslate because each time WP is updated qTranslate will lock you out of editing your web site.

The best way to stop the auto updates completely is to edit your wp-config.php file in your web site’s home directory (I use an FTP program to get access to this file – I recommend WinSCP). Add the following to this file:

    define( 'AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED', true );

This is according to the WordPress codex page on the subject found at:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Configuring_Automatic_Background_Updates

This way, I should be able to defer any update to WP until the author of qTranslate updates his plugin to match the new WP version. Only once he’s done that will it be safe to take the WP update.

One of the joys of using the qTranslate plugin.

    (@dccharron)

I think my problems were all caused by the de-activation of qTranslate. The dashboard conflict disappeared once I de-activated it. I was not able to get any modal to work but I had such a mess from the de-activation that it was not possible to isolate the cause. Once I re-activated qTranslate, the mess was largely fixed.

Sadly, qTranslate seems very popular (1.1 million downloads) so anyone using it will probably experience a conflict with your plugin. You need to decide how important those 1.1 million users are to you. To get them to use your plugin you either have to debug qTranslate or find a workaround on your own that eliminates the conflict. Not fun.

    Good luck.

I tried several times to import my backup file using PHPmyadmin but my line is playing up at the moment and the tar file is close to 200Mb so this was not working. Instead, I reinstalled qtranslate. Presto. The web site is back! Phew.

Re-installing didn’t work either. So I’m trying to restore from my backup.

Another follow up. Just discovered that my Meta Slider is no longer working. I’m going to try re-installing WordPress.
