Esmi, I’m sorry for having confused you (and myself).
I have some sort of issues that threw up this quirk (no plugins, I think).
Do NOT ask me how/why, but within the 8 or 9 WP sites I have (with my hoster), I had one new install that actually did show me a “posts” section in the appearance->menus section.
As I was installing a new site with someone sitting next to me at my PC today, that person can confirm that it was there (just checked with her again). It didn’t make sense to me as someone who has – say – 10.000 posts does NOT need a select box from which he/she can choose a post to add to a menu. The WP-> appearance->menu page would load forever.
To solve the problem I was experiencing again and again with various WP installations today and in the past was to DELETE all my browsers (I have a copy of most popular ones on my PC, IE, FF, Opera, Safari, etc.) completely (also all registry entries) and reinstall them.
I just completed this after my last post.
Right now, everything works fine.
And, to be quite honest, I am quite relieved. Thanks for your help, please ignore the ramblings of some old WP user and …
… if you should ever be in Germany, I owe you some super-huge beers.
And I mean that.Contact me!
??I’ll mark this “resolved” … and just shut up.
Promise.
??Yes, that’s what I’m referring to.
The box from which I can select any of my posts in the appearance -> menus (to add them to a menu) is missing completely. I have it in other WP installs.Everything else works.
As I mentioned before, I don’t need that option (at all), but its absence makes me suspicious. Since it is missing, I suspect that my WP installation is faulty.
Esmi, thanks again for chiming in once more. ??
OK.
I’m back, in the hope that you are not gone, esmi. ??
Everything works fine, but in the menu builder, I still don’t have a “posts” box. I don’t need it (never have, never will), but that problem tells me that my DB/WP setup is still NOT 100% OK.
In the menu builder, I have:
Theme Locations
Custom Links
Pages
CategoriesA “Posts” select box is missing.
It has been a long time since I last worked with the website and all I can recall is that about 2 years ago, I had to delete some posts via the DB, posts that I had entered multiple times with the same title (and those titles were identical in the DB, not appended with post-01, post-02, or whatever).
Maybe, I screwed things up that time?
That’s all I can remember.
Would be nice if you or anyone else could chime in here with some thoughts.
Thanks!??
Well, here’s my promised feedback on the whole procedure.
a) Everything went fine. The blog is back to where it was before my DB got corrupted.
b) The problem with the menu builder is/was definitely a theme issue. I was pretty certain about that, but I wanted to make sure. So, I went through the procedure several times, always starting with a clean DB, a clean empty folder and one of my DB dumps. As soon as I installed the offending theme, I got the problem. The problem also persisted once I removed/deleted the theme.
So, thanks a bunch for your help, esmi. I’m one happy camper again … and have switched to a mobile-friendly responsive theme instead of using the intended bloated other one that was throwing up this darn problem.
OK.
Shall do.??
I know, but I have no images and only a few files I linked to (absolute https:// links in a different folder in my server root; only PDF files).
My plan was to reinstall the site (posts and pages) and DB as was, then update, then install a theme I have selected and start over with just that.
I’m going for a clean install with just my posts AND PAGES via the DB dump.
So why shouldn’t I upload the wp-contents folder (original that comes with WP 3.0.5)? It only contains the standard themes and plugins that came with WP 3.0.5?
Sorry for these dumb questions.
OK.
I’ll give that a try tonight (in about two hours) and report back here when done.Just to make sure I do it right:
a) Download 3.0.5
b) Install into empty DB.
c) Upload my old SQL dump via phpMyAdmin.
d) Upgrade WP to the latest version.
Correct. Thanks for your help so far.
I can’t follow anymore (I’m a noob in this area).
Sorry.I installed 3.0, uploaded my DB via MySQL dump and then upgraded WP to the latest version (as of yesterday).
If I understand correctly, I should upload the core scripts (which ones?) into that present WP install … or should I redo the whole process by installing 3.0.5., uploading my dump into the DB and then upgrade to the newest version.?
@esmi Thanks for your input, by the way!
It was “3.0.1 to 3.0.5” (15477).
But the reason I rolled back was, amongst other issues, the same menu builder problem that was already present in a WP setup that was continuously upgraded from 2.8 (11548) to 3.2.1 (18226).
When this problem first appeared, I cannot say, but the first time I noticed it was when I tried out three different Pro themes.
Thanks for your response!
I ran 3.0. then

I reinstalled 3.0 (no plugins but default) into a clean folder and clean DB.
Then I uploaded my old October 2010 dump into the new DB.
I then updated WP to the latest version.
The error must have been i my DB already way back when. What I’m trying to find out are two things:
Where can I check where the extra menu builder boxes come from (DB/functions.php/…?)?
Somewhere, there must be a wrong setting.
This must be theme related.
With the default theme, I get everything but a “posts” box.
I don’t even know if there should be one?I’ll investigate.

I had already read that and, unfortunately, it doesn’t cover my problem.
For example, I have no idea how high IDs can go. as you can see from above, mine have already reached a ceiling of sorts and I wonder when the whole thing will go bust.
