If you need to modify core files, and you don’t want to have problems when you update WordPress, make it a plugin.
There is no other possible right answer.

If you assign the contributor role, each contributor will have a button with written “Submit for Review” instead of the button with “Publish”.

After you tried what keesiemeijer said, did you go back to your Codestyling Localization and check if you had a new ‘Continue reading’ untranslated string?

Ok, on the top right of the editing screen, there are two tabs, Visual and HTML.
Are you sure you are clicking on Visual before typing your posts?

Because if you type them on the HTML tab, your formatting will be stripped as well.
Also, on the Visual tab, you should have the button I mentioned.

Ok, so let’s start from the beginning again:

1) Did you find that string with Codestyling Localization, or was it missing?

2) In which file did you find the original string?

3) Did you check all template files and the string was contained in one file only?

Did you try to delete your browser cache after you modified the original file, and check again?

What I can think of is that your site might have gone down, and when it came back up the scheduled time was already missed. Is it possible?

You should setup a cron job.
