Maybe you solved the problem already because the topic started one month ago, but maybe this helps anyway.
I had exactly the same problem. Those span classes appeared when I used Google translate. When you copy the translated part from inside the Google translator and paste in the WP editor you will get all those spans.
You can easily strip all that rubbish by pasting the text inside a plain text editor first and copy again from there.

I’m having the same issues since WP 3.1. but got no reply from the devs until now.

Only the first article from April 5 should be visible. This is the main category. However, many other articles from sub cats are visible too. Not all, weird indeed.

While recreating my old WP site, I too became extremely frustrated with the terrible spacer line. Can’t believe that this problem is still here.

However, I just tried the solution that purusinha posted above and it seems to work fine! I can edit and reedit my posts and they stay clean. Keep my fingers crossed and still waiting for the new WP editor.

The problem still exists. Also had to downgrade back to 1.3.
There’s no reply to e-mails about the problem.
