  • Very strange – in FF, your RailDay javascript is falling behind the search button. (1024×768) I’ve never seen a javascript cornertag fall behind anything else.

    Otherwise – looks great!!!

I’m not sure if there is a way to optimize a theme to be SEO friendly. Certainly SEO techniques can be used outside of the theme to increase visibility, but spiders, web crawlers, and ranking engines are looking through content and hits on specific web pages. As the wordpress theme builds each page dynamically, each template page is represtented on a single HTML page on the web.

I’m very much a proponent of the “give me good content and you’ll get a good page rank” idea.

Basically I’m jsut saying I don’t think it matters what theme you use as it all just ends up on a single HTML page anyway. (I’m not an SEO expert, so certainly open to contradicting arguments).

Thanks everyone. I’ve been using the standard site.com/?p=123 and have not wanted to convert. It’s nice knowing there’s no reason to do so.

Haven’t seen that theme before. That little javascript is SOOO cool.

Site looks great. Colors work well. Very readable.

I’m looking at it on a 1280×1024. The font is pretty small and I’m not sure there’s the need for the 4th column. Have you thought about taking the “pic of the week”/”donation” column and putting it with the 3rd column? This would make the 3rd column longer, and give you more space to pread out.

Simply put, there’s a lot of negative space on the page.

Other than that 4th column, the site looks great. I like the colors and a lot of visual interest spread throughout the page.

    Such a great idea. Thanks!!!
(is that all “asides” are? A category that displays in a aeparate loop? I’ve been wondering for months!!!)

As I posted a couple days ago (new site design) my site is also rooted in Hemmingway Bright, although it’s hard to see that anymore.

I’m actualyl writing for a couple of reasons:

    1) Nudger, what parts of CSS are you specifically having issues with? I’ve modified the CSS in terms of colors, fonts, font colors, etc without an issue. Rather than asking for a CSS file that would be specific to someone else’s site, you might just point out what element you want to modify and we can go from there.

    2) Cypher, what asides plugin are you using?

    Thanks!!!

I have a very similar design to that, but the blocks are at the bottom and the post and sidebar are at the top (heading obviously above that). https://systematicHR.com

Unfortunately, I used more html than CSS to create it. What I did do, was start out with Hemmingway Bright which has a 3 block theme as it’s sidebar (sidebar located at bottom instead of on the side). You can simply call the sidebar right after you call the header template. Then put your post and loop below that.

Just as a resource to anyone else, if you’re looking to test out your site, I found a couple other places to get screenshots:

https://browsershots.org/ is free and will also return an Opera browser screenshot if you’re lucky (you have to wait in a queue). It also returns MSIE, FF, Safari and others that are somewhat more obscure. I like the safaritest I mentioned above best though.

Everyone probably knows about this https://htmlvalidator.com/ for validation, but it’s worth mentioning anyway.

Happy coding and I hope that helps.

    Wendy:

I can’t tell what version of WP you’re on, but if it’s 1.5 and higher, I’ve used future dating pretty successfully. I actually currently have over 30 future posts ranging out into June. (I write my site a month or 2 in advance).

Sorry I couldn’t help more on the drafts not saving. Might have been a server issue.

    Nice blog…

Thanks Moshu: I probably won’t be using much in the way of images. It’s simply too hard to find free images on the web. I do like how it breaks up the page and adds some interest, but I’m not sure it’s worth the time investment. My posts don’t generally have a specific image that is involved unless it’s a comany logo.

Samboll: Thanks for the feedback. There were some parts of the homepage that took an eternity for me to get right. Easy to read was what I was going for.

My host is inconsistent sometimes. Page loads this morning were taking around 2 seconds longer than usual. There are quite a few .gif files on the homepage, but all are quite small. The page takes 7-10 seconds on dial-up, so dsl or cable should be instant.

    In reply to: Footnote experience?

I use Simon’s and am very happy with it. Unfortunately, it does not work well with many of my other plug-ins. For example, the e-mail and print plugs from Lester Chan and the subscribe2 plugin. The mark-up is not read by these other plugs, but I’m guessing this is a problem with the other footnote plughins as well.

I have had more than 50 at a time. However, I don’t know if there’s a specific limit.

I’ve noticed that on the “manage posts” screen you get to see all your drafts, but on the “write post” screen it only shows a limited number (with a ## more link).

For automatic publish times, youre drafts are not really drafts anymore. You can future date the post date/time and wordpress will automatically post it for you.

Thanks!! I’ll test both of those first in my devl environment.

Well, most of my previous suspicions were correct. WP-cron and subscribe2 are only e-mailing posts that were published after the plug-ins were installed.

Originally, I wanted to re-save all my future dated posts. This has not worked. If I want my posts for the next few weeks e-mailed, I’ll need to copy them into a new post and delete the old one. Oh well.

If anyone else ever has this problem, hope this helps.
