I found it.
Upgrading to php 5.3 (at least) did the job

I found the problem

Finally I drill down to woocommerce itself…
And after making a diff of my and just downloaded code I found the difference. In class-wc-form-handler.php there was some code after wp_safe_redirect and before exit; Obviously I incidentally pasted it there while looking into the code.

Shame on me!

I searched for “woocommerce_registration_redirect” and it appears only in functions.php and in woocommerce/includes/class-wc-form-handler.php

I just tested on a new installation with only Woocommerce activated. And the code works! I will start deactivating other plugins one by one…

in my theme’s functions.php. Other code that is in it file works
