  • I need to do this as well, as I had a visitor who was reading one post but then made a comment about it in a totally different post.

Maybe there’s a plugin with advanced editing that allows this?

Netdetective…comment links will neither hurt nor help your Google Pagerank, particularly since the ‘nofollow’ rule is auto added to outbound links posted by visitors.

Pagerank really isn’t that big of a deal (and hasn’t been for quite some time). It’s just an indicator of how many links point to a page, and a VERY generalized gauge of the authority of those links. If you have a single post page with PR 3 for instance, its Pagerank might fluctuate as it drops and/or gains links…but it will never ‘lose’ or ‘syphon’ off PR to outbound links located on that page.

Where people get confused is that regular static links do ‘pass on’ Pagerank. So that same PR 3 page will pass on more PR influence if you only place a few outgoing links as opposed to a huge list of links, but you can’t create an ever increasing Pagerank loop within your site by ONLY linking to your own pages.

Ultimately your PR is based on inbound links from other sites.

rburnie…you can set subpages of pages if you want to categorize your static pages. It also works, as Java pointed out, if you setup your post categories with single posts. You can use permalinks to create friendly links, and simply remove the ‘date’ and ‘author’ type tags.

Not knowing what type of info and how you want your page navigation set up makes it hard for others to give explicit instructions…but there are several ways to approach this.

    Budoink’s list is great!

I’ve tested I think just about every photo plugin out there and none of them offer bulk/mass file uploads. Maybe that’s a harder feature to add, but I would say it’s my NUMBER ONE request. Right now i’m using WPG2 with Gallery 2, but I find G2 to be overkill.

Other super important features for me would be…

-optional automatic thumb generation on/after upload
    -password protected categories
    -description/title fields for each item
-integrate single image or album set into WP posts
    -integrate with WP templates
-options to choose full page or custom popup pages for single images within an album
-options to choose slideshow or static views for albums

If you can come up with something that offers all of this I would be ecstatic…and of course more than happy to rally for donations.

Jclick…there is a plugin that will let you embed adsense blocks within a post, I can’t remember the name off the top of my head though. You just have to make sure you don’t go over the Adsense TOS. I believe they allow you up to 3 blocks per page, correct?

Okay…just wanted to add that I never installed the Gallery2 rewrite module, my permalinks issue has something to do with upgrading to WP 2. Gallery 2 and WPG2 are working fine for me now.

I had initially placed the ‘imageframes’ php code in the wrong place within the header which is why I had errors.

I’ve been testing Gallery2 and the WPG2 plugin and I think it would work perfectly for what you want to do. You have all the features of Gallery2, but integrated within your WP site so everything is seemless to visitors. It even ports member registration across the two scripts, and I believe you members can also upload their own galleries if you’re interested in that.

It took me a couple days to get everything installed and working with WP 2, but it was worth it. I don’t really know anything about php n such, so that might be why it took me so long.

From what I’ve read the only other setup that offers these features is embedding Coppermine with WP.

BTW, I think I’ve gone through a tested all the gallery plugins and if I remember correctly using WPG2 with Gallery2 is the only way to get bulk uploads (unless you don’t mind doing them via ftp seperately).

I just installed WPG2 with an upgrade install of WP2 and I’m definitely having trouble.

G2 works fine on it’s own, but I’m having permalink issues with WP2, and while I can access wpg2 via the options admin panel I get a 404 error if I click on any of the tabs for it. At this point I have no idea why, other than maybe it’s also do to the permalink deal. I did use the wpg2 fixes as well.

If you’re desperate you can always access the files via ftp and delete the plugin. Then try logging in.

I installed the WPG2 plugin the other day with WP 2.0 and couldn’t get it to work either. I have everything up and running and can view the WPG2 options page via the WP panel, but if I click on any Gallery 2 tabs it gives me a 404 error.

To go back to the original question…there are some who feel that long urls might be risky, but in my experience they have not been a problem. You really have to create an entire page full of spam techniques to even come close to be banned.

There is no black and white in SEO, some things are riskier than others but even then it doesn’t really mean you’ll get penalized. There are many many things that would be considered serious spam compared to long page/file titles (such as hidden text).

As someone else mentioned the best optimized permalink structure for file names is ‘yourdomain/postname’. The more folders a file address has in it the less importance search engines give to it…but there are so many other factors that can outweigh that as well (age of the site, amount of content on site, number of links to specific post and the site, etc).

All of these elements build up to help you achieve ‘authority’ status. The most authority you have, the more often your posts will get top ranking.

As a side note…I’m personally having some troubles with the new 2.0 upgrade and permalinks. If you’ve got a large site and use permalinks I would NOT recommend upgrading just yet.

I’m having a similar problem as many others (permalinks not working correctly with 2.0), but I can’t duplicate the 404 error on all of the blogs I run.

I’ve got three different blog sites (all on the same server) that I upgraded. All had permalinks prior to the upgrade and worked fine. Now, one of the works perfectly on 2.0 WITH custom permalinks. The other two do not.

I can get custom pm’s to work using just /%postname%/ but not in any other form.

One bizarre little sidenote is that one of the blos also works with a custom category base, but the other does not.

I’ve uploaded the two file patches Ryan posted in another thread and it hasn’t made a difference. I also tried editing the wp_options table database as ‘jjacobsen’ mentioned above, but that didn’t help either. So now I have three blogs all using three different permalink setups. heh

    Hi,

I just started using WP and I really like how you setup your categories (like the one here: https://www.cameraontheroad.com/?cat=34).

    How did you do that?

In reply to: Email newsletter plugins?

I just started using WP and was looking for the same thing. This would be invaluable for my clients. Seems their are blogging scripts, and there are newsletter scripts, but noone has created something to bring the two together. This would rock!

I’m not a programmer but I’d be willing try and help.
