The whole point of WP 3.0 post types was to get away from having to use categories to section off content like this and use them solely for organizing them like they built for.

I don’t get the /news/ part on my pages, so why on my post types? When I have given it a unique permalink. Defo a crappy way of workings in WP!

The solution above isn’t going to work as I want to have URL’s like /news/2010/20/post-name/ or /news/category/system-updates/

So how do I get /news/%category%/%postname%/ for my news posts and /events/event-name/ for events post type?

Any thoughts on this?

I have the home.php as my site home page as I don’t need a static WP page as all the content on it is dynamic and wouldn’t need the CMS stuff like adding text etc.

I have my news which is then using a WP page called news, this used to automatically grab index.php as WordPress looked at it as the new loop page, but suddenly in WP 3 this is no longer the case. Instead I have opted to use a custom page template for news and deselecting a “Posts Page”. However in WP semantics calling home.php for your Posts Page is incorrect, it should be index.php!

I still think index.php should be used for your posts page over home.php as index.php is the main template file, and home.php is if you want a separate home page template (not CMS-based page).

I’m using both. I have some sites running as MS and some running stand-alone but sharing users and cookies. The MS stuff works fine, and so do the stand alone apart from the permissions bug.

Easiest bet is to just create a page and put the links in (if you know how many you have) but I’d recommend grabbing BuddyPress and using the Blogs module

I found this: esc_url( wp_login_url( $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ) ) but is this the best solution? and will it work with plugins etc that interact with the usual wp_login_url() function?
