Very interesting question that I was about to ask myself. I guess the plugin is so a value that the “no-footprint” version could be paid, however I’m concerned that I can find sites using it so easily that the big G could also do so in order to penalize what it’d consider over-optimized sites…

I think there may have been a change with Dropbox indeed, as we had a similar issue in an unrelated (custom-made) script that sends some PDF from an accounting application to our DB account. Not solved yet.

I experience exactly the same issue on a pretty standard WP installation, on Plesk, so no need to describe more I guess. I’ll follow the thread and add details if it can help. Thanks !

I am positive the profile level required to see a plugin can be set in it, so even though it’s not done yet (I haven’t checked), I’m sure it can be done by Yoast or hacked by anybody who can edit a php file.

You have to ask your hosting provider if you do not know your settings, impossible to guess. An error log is a text file usually called error_log.

They’re in your web server. Probably accessible by an interface (webmin ? plesk ? cpanel ?), ssh or ftp.
Plugins can be deactivated by mysql or by changing the plugins dir name by ftp.

I guess if the sentence “The latest stable release of WordPress (Version xxx) is available” never changes one bit, it could be done by scraping, but it’s not the strict method I’d like to use.

The error logs of your server will tell you exactly what goes wrong. Most likely a PHP error triggers this, maybe caused by a faulty plugin.

What you describe looks like a PHP issue. Do you have a recent PHP version and at least PHP5 ? The Apache error logs on your servers could shed some light on this.
