In WPML translations I see this wrapped in <p></p>, e.g:

<p>[ngg src="galleries" ids="3" display="basic_thumbnail"]</p>

Maybe you can try that?

Yes, installed 3.1.1.5 and at first glance it’s working now. At least I don’t get the
message “A variable mismatch has been detected” any more and the changed text remains in the Alt text/title and Description fields.

Still seeing some issue with WPML translations, but I will test with a new fresh install tomorrow. Have changed so much in my current test installation it’s better to start from scratch.
