Forum: Localhost Installs
In reply to: Install WP on a localhost using Aquia Damp StackI guess nobody here knows about the Aquia Damp Stack that I mentioned above. I just tried to load WP onto it and failed so I will do it the normal way. My reason for asking the above is that I didn’t want to have a number of server stacks which would simply duplicate PHP and mySQL that I already have on my computer.
Thanks anyway
DanThanks, that’s good to know. I have never used 1&1 for a website but I have had a domain name parked there for over a year now. I do know of others who used to use them and that’s why I thought I may try them. I won’t after hearing this.
Not sure if Bluehost moral code would bother my wife with her topic, but I’ll let her know about it. Thanks.
Thanks “esmi,” you answered my question.
Just to clarify the reason for my question: My wife wants to set up a free blog for her hobby. Later she wants to graduate this into a commercial website and monetize it using affiliate marketing, Google Adsense, and promoting her own products. She wants to have a domain name she can use throughout the whole process.
“a-johnson and WebStyley” mentioned their choice of hosts. I’m not certain if I would use 1&1 or Bluehost; however, they have been recommended by another forum and I do have a couple of domain names parked on them for future use which I could transfer to other hosts. Can you give me specifics of why you do not recommend them?
I just did a restart on my computer and the same thing happened. I cannot access localhost/wordpress nor login. So I won’t re-install again unless I can get a solution to the problem.

In reply to: Not able to open WordPress installed on my home pcI was looking at the 5 minute install page when I wrote the above post, but then found out that I had installed WP completely (except for maybe some themes and plug-ins I might want).
Please forgive the Newbie (me) for fumbling around…but I guess that’s how we learn a lot of things

In reply to: Not able to open WordPress installed on my home pcSamboll,
I finally got the WordPress install to come up. What I did was save the unzipped file to a folder on the desktop, changed the wp-config-sample.php file as instructed and saved the changed file as wp-config.php and then copied folder with all its subfolders and files into the htdocs folder of xampplite on the root drive. It worked! Thanks for your help. I haven’t done the installing yet, so we’ll see what happens now. But so far so good.
Thanks again

In reply to: Not able to open WordPress installed on my home pcThanks samboll,
Do you mean “extract” the files to htdocs in xampplite?
What I did was open the zip file and then selcted all, copied (Ctl+C) and pasted them (Ctl+V) into the htdocs folder. Should I have extracted them to the folder instead?

In reply to: Internet Explorer won’t Access Local HostI’m having the same problem (also new to WordPress). I used xampp.exe (lite) on my root drive. according to the tutorials on tamba2.org.uk and downloaded wordpress in a zip file.
When I try to access …localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php I get the following displayed on IE browser:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.
? Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
? Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
? Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.I don’t know if port 80 is open and don’t know how to find out.
I’m running it on Windows XP Home edition. I’m using Windows (software) Firewall. Can you help?
Thanks
Dan
