I noticed that too, and wow, things are fixed quickly around here! I wonder if the fix has also addressed the problem I noticed and described here:

I am a fan of the topnav, perhaps you could put your categories in one?
Also, there’s no title? It would be nice to use said title as a link abck to the main page from your permalinks.
I think it looks GREAT though.

check the CSS margin-bottom value for the div’s above your content, and/or the margin-top for the div that contains your content.

It doesn’t look as perfect in IE, but it is nice.

I’m using 1.3-alpha-4 and the latest nightly, and I’m also interested in using /%category%/%postname%/ , but after using the “update permalink structure” button i dont get a new copy of new rewrite rules. What gives?

I have recently discovered RE_INVIGORATE. It gives me a variety of ways to look at who’s reading my site, and without cluttering it up with a logo, or whatever.

This summer I did some work with a compendium for Eastgate Systems of projects very much like your own. Your frustration is a shared one. The goal of the compendium was to gather like-minded projects together to facilitate some dialogue among them, so as not to leave them all in a vacuum. the compundium isn’t online jsut yet, but it should be in a couple of weeks. Are you interested in lsiting your class blogs in there? Send me an e-mail.
Otherwise, I think you should reccomend to your students that they post links-to and comments about (not to mention trackbacks to and comments on) whatever like-minded blogs there are out there. Blogs themselves, rather than this space, are probably the most fertile ground for what you’re after.

there is a difference between most frequently commented upon (lists of which are created with plugins mentioned in the links above) and most often read.
Is there a plugin that will keep track of which posts are most frequently read?

i tried that, and it broke the whole blog, so i reset it.
really it is as if I have renamed the wordpress directory. all the files (index.php and wp-blog-header.php) are still together in the same directory, its just that now the directory is renamed, and the comments are kinda broken.

actually, yes. it was relevant. for anyone hoping to solve the problem with permalinks etc. in the newest build, and who also doesn’t have the ability to use a .htaccess file w/o an error, my previous post mentions a solution that has worked for me.
now, about those trackbacks….
