To make the changes you desire, you may need to actually make a couple of code edits to your theme files.

1) The social icons are probably located inside your header.php file. Look for: id=”socialbookmark-wrapper” and remove the entire div

2) To remove the search box on top, open your header.php file and look for: id=”search remove the entire div

3) The “Recent Post” and edit the “featured links” are probably the default display when no widgets are assigned to your sidebar. Please try adding a widget ( WP-Admin –> Appearance –> Widgets – once applied, the current “Recent Post” and edit the “featured links” should be removed

I know how to hard code a widget “area” but not an actual widget. Can I hard code a “text widget” into the theme? if so, any thoughts on how to approach this?

Maybe not an actual widget area, how about a simple query to pull the most recent post from a category that is created in the main blog. Any ideas on doing this?
