What may be? Do you mean that it is normal?

No, the other way round. WpFc did recompress the main images but not the small versions. And it was the first run.

More precisely: Some of the small versions are not changed at all (exactly same file length), some are reduced by 0.1kB or so. (But all the main images have been reduced by >100kB.)

I’ve made a test run with a couple of images, and of course the quality is reduced. Here is an example pair. It’s clearly visible already at 100%, look at the second window and other details.

But no reason to worry, this is absolutely normal at a file size reduction of 20%! And there’s always the backup folder, in case it is too visible.

BTW, the low res versions (768×1024, 825×510, etc.) have not been changed by the plugin. Is this normal?

I think you misunderstood “optimization”. Here it’s not meant in terms of quality (‘making the image better’) but in terms of speed (reducing file size).

But, as you certainly know as a photographer, for both things the better solution is always to prepare your images properly before the upload. This (and similar) plugins are quick solutions for people who upload their photos directly from the smartphone and don’t use Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop, Graphicconverter, etc.

    Hi,

thanks for the very nice plugin!

I’m interested in more information about image optimization, too.

Looking at the 2 images you provided above I can see that…

    • Resolution is unchanged
    • Compression ratio is increased from 1:28 to 1:39
    • Color profile is removed
    • EXIF data is removed

    Questions:

    1. How is the higher compression ratio exactly achieved? (which tool)
    2. As the image loses quality and meta data, is this destructive or is the original image stored somewhere?
    3. What are the plugin’s criteria to decide if an image should be recompressed at all?
    4. If an image has already been “optimized” will it be recompressed again (and again) when I click the ‘Optimize All JPEG” button at a later time? Or …
    • …does the plugin maintain an index of already optimized images?
    • …If Yes, will that index be lost when I temporarly dectivate/uninstall the plugin?
    • Do you have any plans to add PNG optimization?
