Short answer: no.

Long: an .swf is not a video file, it’s a program that is executed by the flash web-browser plugin. A .swf might behave like a video, either because it embeds/loads a video, or generates graphics etc., but it’s not a video (it’s not like .mp4, .webm, .ogg, .flv).

SWFPut includes a .swf flash program that is a video player (and also a HTML5 player), designed for video files like .mp4 or .flv.

Finally, a .swf program can play another .swf — depending on whats in the .swf to be played — but that’s a sort of special application. SWFPut is designed to be general and reliable, so it does not attempt to play arbitrary .swf executables with unknown behavior.

Well, it’s working — with autoplay — under GNU/Linux, with both Firefox and Chromium. I suppose that’s small comfort, with the ubiquity of Windows.

I can’t check with Windows again now, since I’d have to reboot my working machine. The only other question I have is whether you closed and restarted the browsers — just picking at straws really.

I can infer that JavaScript, probably part of your theme, is enumerating all video elements (and other elements too), and diddling with them as if it is the sole controller, without considering whether the source of the video is a plugin from another party with its own code handling its own video.

The change I suggested to ‘aspectautoadj=”false”‘ stops SWFPut from detaching the video from its parent and replacing it with a canvas element, which it does optionally to change the aspect ratio of anamorphic video. That change had been making the theme’s scripts cause errors in execution contexts, as elements were no longer where/what it expected.

‘aspectautoadj=”false”‘ leaves the original video element in place, but now I can see that the theme is trying to overlay another element with its own controls, which obviously it should not. (Found with Konqueror on Linux).

WordPress is designed to allow a choice of themes and plugins from many sources, so each source of code should be cooperative, and careful not to interfere with other code.

It seems that your theme is meant to be an ‘all in one’ solution? If so, then it might be within its design goals to try modifying all video.

I’m not sure there’s any further to go without help from the Enfold deleveloper — like providing elements the contents of which are left untouched.

I’ve just checked in Windows and I find that /support/ is not working in IE, Chrome, Opera, but is working in Firefox; but /contact/ is working in all of the above.

With GNU/Linux (Ubuntu 14.04) Firefox, Chromium, and misc. webkit based browsers are good with both pages, but Opera locks up — but Opera in Linux uses an older web engine which might be obsolete (on MS it uses webkit now).

So, what is the difference between /contact/ (OK) and /support/ (NG)?

Will you try changing an attribute in the shortcode? Please make ‘aspectautoadj=”true”‘ be ‘aspectautoadj=”false”‘.

Also, if the theme has any video related options, features, widgets, etc. try switching those on/off.

Yes, the video is working now, and you should have some control over the order of ogg, webm, and mp4 sources.

I’m going to reorder your questions a little:

One last question please – can you tell me how I can remove the border / box around the video

The thin border is specified in the CSS of your theme.

By design, SWFPut arranges for video to be presented on a page in a manner similar to an image (jpeg, png, etc.) placed with the WordPress “Add Media” facility.

To do this, SWFPut video players are within a ‘div’ element that has the “wp-caption” class, which is the class that WordPress uses for elements containing images. It is the theme’s CSS that specifies the effect of the “wp-caption” class.

You can edit your theme’s CSS, if you’re comfortable doing that (which would likely affect image borders too).

Your theme has a “div .wp-caption” block with “border-width: 1px;” and “border-style: solid;” — try changing to “border-width: 0px;” and “border-style: none;” — but it might not be that simple, CSS can be tricky (there might be other sources of style inheritance).

Of course, any changes to your theme will be lost on update, and the theme developer will probably not want to support it if changes are made.

The best thing to do would be to make a “child theme” which will leave the original untouched. Look at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Child_Themes.

and also remove the controls bar as well, please?

That should be easy because it is a feature of SWFPut. I emphasize “should” because the things you report suggest that your theme is interfering with other things on the editor page — I don’t want to cast blame without being certain, but it doesn’t seem to be a free theme from the www.ads-software.com theme repository, so I won’t be able to look at it.

The setting to hide the control bar does not appear in the ‘easy’ setup dialog (which it seems is not available anyway, I assume due to the theme).

In an earlier response I mentioned the “advanced” form that appears in a ‘metabox’ on the editor page. Find that — it is titled “SWFPut Video”.

There is a row of buttons near the top. Click “Fill from post” one or more times until you can see your video URLs in the “HTML5 video URLs or media library IDs” field.

If that form doesn’t seem to be working, it’s probably because your theme has changed the editor — you did mention the “‘standard’ WordPress Editor” and the “normal WordPress editor” so it might be that the form will not be able to fetch and change editor contents (the “shortcode”) with the ‘not normal’ editor.

If the form does seem to be working, scroll down to a section titled “Behavior” and select checkboxes “Play on load (else waits for play button):” and “Loop play:” and “Hide and disable control bar:”, and then scroll back to the top of the form and click the “Replace current in post” button.

Using the Avia Content Editor that is bundled with the Enfold template, although I hit the SWFPut Media button, it looks the same as the standard ‘Add Media’ button.

This is surely a/the source of the problem. The editor included with WordPress is called “TinyMCE” and it has a JavaScript API for working with it.

Whether “Avia Content Editor” is derived from, or is entirely different from, the TinyMCE editor, it obviously has important differences that the SWFPut code cannot anticipate.

But …

Therefore I had to create the video in standard mode, cut the html code and then paste it into the Avia Content block so it appeared on the right. It’s a bit of a workaround but at least I can edit the other pages as well now.

Well, I wish it wasn’t necessary, but I’m glad you found a workaround. An old expression from my locale “more power to ya” comes to mind.

You say you “cut the html code and then paste it” but I wonder if it is the shortcode you cut and paste (which would be better).

First, thanks for your patience.

I followed your instructions exactly by selecting the ‘Add Media’ button and using ctrl to select the 3 versions of video, but now I see an ‘Oops there is a URL issue’ on the video?

Okay, this is progress. The video on your test page is from SWFPut.

The video displaying with the “Oops […]” text is meant to indicate to the site administrator that something isn’t working; it also doubles as the placeholder video when new SWFPut video is added in the editor.

What’s happening is that SWFPut is placing the Shockwave Flash video player in preference to the HTML5 video player (SWFPut includes both types), but the Flash player has no video URL, so the the default/error video is showing.

Please do this: log in to your WordPress site. The main menu has an item labeled “Settings” and it should have a “SWFPut Plugin” selection. Select that, and you should get the “SWFPut Plugin Configuration” page.

Scroll down a bit and you’ll find a section named “Video Placement Options” and then some help text and then a ‘checkbox’ option labeled “HTML5 video primary: [checkbox here] Place HTML5 video as primary content”.

Make sure the checkbox is checked (selected), then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Save Settings” button (else settings are lost).

Now reload the test page. Does your video show now?

I originally tried both ‘Add Media’ and ‘Add SWFPut Media’ buttons, but they look exactly the same.

Actually, the result you see immediately after clicking one or the other of those buttons should be completely different.

When you click ‘Add Media’ you should find yourself with a media selection dialog window.

When you click ‘Add SWFPut Media’ you should simply see a new video appear in the editor, with defaults. The result should look like https://agalena.nfshost.com/b1/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/new-page3.png

Isn’t that what you saw? If not, what web browser are you using? Name and version? For example, I don’t think MSIE version 9 or less will work, lacking support for standard JavaScript functions. (I cannot test with obsolete MSIE, I only have the current version available.)

The WordPress template we are using is ‘Enfold’ which allows us to add the ‘Avia Layout Builder’ (a feature to be able to arrange the post layout with slideshows etc).

I’m not familiar with them, but I doubt they are a problem.

Both SWFPut and the WordPress-included video player work by inserting a “shortcode” (a code processed by WordPress) in your post or page. You will not see the shortcodes if your editor is in “Visual” mode but you will see them if you select the “Text” tab. You probably don’t want to see the shortcodes — the “Visual” editor is meant to give some idea of how the page will appear.

The point is, shortcodes are very basic to WordPress operation, and if a theme or plugin interfered with them, that would be very bad. Much worse than a small oversight or bug. I don’t assume the things you mentioned are that bad.

Could this be the reason we cannot see the SWFPut options when we hit the pencil icon?

No. I checked your link, and there is still no SWFPut video on your page, only the WordPress-included video player. The SWFPut setup forms will not affect that at all, and the pencil icon will invoke setup for the WordPress video, not SWFPut.

We can see it on the bottom of the page though so I have added the following in the ‘HTML5 video URL’s’ field as instructed however, the video defaults to .mp4 if one has been added.

SWFPut does add an additional form on the editor page, and it will probably appear just below the editor (these ‘metaboxes’ can be moved). That form can be thought of as an advanced form: it provides additional options, but is more difficult to use.

In any case, that form will have no effect on the WordPress-included video player that is actually present on your page; it is not SWFPut video.

So, let’s start at the beginning. Let the existing video alone for now, and try adding a new SWFPut video following the steps shown at:

I looked at the pages at the links you posted — actually, the videos on your pages are not from SWFPut, but rather the default video player included with WordPress. (You do have SWFPut installed, I see from your page’s html.)

SWFPut does not replace the built-in WordPress video player; they coexist and you may choose which to use.

When you install SWFPut it adds a button next to the “Add Media” button on the editor pages. The new button is labeled “Add SWFPut Video.” It seems you’ve added your videos with the other, “Add Media” button. (Note that you should use the latest SWFPut — now version 3.0 — the “Add SWFPut Video” button was added with version 2.9.)

BTW, my previous reply does not apply at all to the built-in WordPress video player.

Hi Neil,

When you first select several videos from the “Add Media” tab they are not sorted, but you can change change the order by hand with some cut and paste.

Select the video and click the edit button (with pencil icon), and then in the field labeled “HTML5 Video URL/ID” you will see URLs for each selected video — each URL is separated by a vertical pipe ‘|’ character.

If you rearrange these URLs so that most-to-least preferred appear in left-to-right order, that should work.

Of course, the type that is actually played will depend on what a visitor’s browser supports — e.g., my Opera on Ubuntu 14.04 does not do MP4 — and I seem to recall that MSIE doesn’t do OGG — but these particulars can change any time. HTML5 video is still pretty new and browser support can be uneven, but IMO it beats flash, which has never been supported on all platforms, and is losing support as time passes.

Let me know if reordering the URLs does the trick. (And post a URL if you don’t mind; I’m interested to see how SWFPut is being used — the plugin doesn’t track users, so I don’t see its usage unless told where to look.)

How can I put a title-description below the video? I can’t find this option in the plugin…

The plugin provides video for posts/pages, and for widgets. Each has a setup form. For posts and pages a title can be placed above the video in the regular editor, and description can be placed below (or above, or maybe even wrapping beside if left or right alignement is selected) also in the regular editor. The widget setup form has a text input field for a title, and it may contain markup as well as text.

The setup form for both the widget and posts/pages videos has a ‘caption’ field suitable for a small description, and the field may contain markup. Depending on your theme, the caption associated with the video may be visually distinct — in fact this caption is similar to the caption you may set for a static image.

With the widget specifically, if you want a description below (or even above) the video, I suggest the “Text” widget that comes with WordPress.
After dragging the SWFPut widget to a sidebar or widget area, you can drag the Text widget just below (or above) it, and add any content there.

As always, the final appearance depends first on your theme, and then markup that you add.

And How can I choose a different aspect rather than the pre formatted aspect (basically the font size) of the widget of my theme?

I’m not sure of the word “aspect” here. The setup forms allow you to set the aspect ratio (width X height) if it differs from the pixel dimensions.

I think you mean something else. Font sizes are primarily set by your theme, but since the title and caption fields of the setup forms (and the WordPress Text widget) accept markup, you can do things like put text in a span element with a style attribute, or an em element. You can put hyperlinks too. (Of course, any markup must make sense: always test!)

I’d like to see an example if you can provide a link.

One more thing: In the admin, when you’re on a post editor page, the help tab at the upper right corner has some help added by SWFPut. It might be dry and wordy (like the person who wrote it [me]), but hopefully it can answer some questions.

Version 1.0.4 is now released, and it addresses this. The initial image is now (optionally) placed in an img element within the flash program’s object element so it will be displayed if flash is not available.

Furthermore, HTML5 video alternates may be specified (and the initial image will then be the fallback if neither flash or HTML5 video are available).

But note that the image, when displayed as a fallback, will be scaled in both dimensions at the size specified for the flash window, so if the pixel aspect ratio is different, the image should be adjusted for proper display (this is not needed for the flash program, which displays the image proportionally).

Thanks for the suggestion. It’s a very good idea, and it had escaped me.

This will be a ‘TODO’ for the next revision (which might take a week or so, because focus is on another plugin almost ready for release, and some new things in the settings page should be carried over to SWFPut).
