thanks for the quick replies! I can’t be related to changes made today as I had the same issue last Friday.
I will try the manual install but your analysis seems correct: I tried installing Google Analytics Dashboard for WP 4.2 which is compatible with this version of WP as well and it did not work so the issue is definately that I cannot install plugins!
