In reply to: WordPress ping problem? (It pings too often?)Have you read the notes on the Plugin Page re. it? https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/maxblogpress-ping-optimizer/
I’ve not got it, but I don’t tend to update my posts that often, which seems to be the issue.

In reply to: Composing off line.I thought I was getting there … https://techtites.com/2009/01/14/fix-the-windows-live-writer-and-wordpress-stripping-tags-issue/
However, I’ve tried the plugin that was created & it didn’t make any difference. Guess I’ll just have to wait until the Uni decides to upgrade the server. Could take some time.
At least I know what the problem is, anyway.

In reply to: XMLRPC – Garbage Characters before <XML> node??I’ve just found this thread & am trying to decide if I have the same problem, or another one.
From what I can tell, most folks have the problem that Live Writer won’t even connect to the blog. Is that right? I’ve had no difficulties getting to the blog ( https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/291727?replies=3 ) – but I have had extraneous characters from the formatting (e.g. /p) creeping in.I’ve tried disabling the plugins, but that didn’t work.

In reply to: Composing off line.I’ve just done some testing (see https://userweb.port.ac.uk/~duke-wie/blog
So far, I’ve tried Scribefire, WindowsLive Blogger & Flock. All of them put some form of extra coding in. I’m sure that they worked fine in the past.
In the settings; under “Remote Authoring”, I’ve got both Atom & XML-RPC enabled, and also “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically”.
I’ve got it set so that Disable the visual editor when writing isn’t ticked (so I have the Visual editor as default when posting).
Could any of these have an impact?

In reply to: Composing off line.I’m not sure I really want a code editor – I have Dreamweaver on that PC anyway; it’s more of something to create posts offline & then to post them when I’m back online.
However, your point is valid; I could just use Dreamweaver & then cut & paste into the editor next time I’m online.

In reply to: Another problem upgrading to 2.7Barny
I got that error (or similiar – can’t quite remember the exact message) – I narrowed it down to the “bad behaviour” plugin – which needed updating.Once I’d deactivated that it was fine. I’ve not got round yet to updating it (mostly because Askimet seems to do a perfectly good job on its own & I know that too many plugins can cause issues)

In reply to: WP Upgrade If You Have Alot Of Plugins & ThemesA quick thought, Lisa, some people have had problems if they’ve installed the blog in a subdirectory – then deleted the files & then uploaded the new files to the root. (or vice versa).
So, you’ll be going to the “old” location of the blog, & the files will be in the new one. That may well explain why even the wp-admin/upgrade.php page wasn’t showing, especially as you’d clearly had your blog working before.

In reply to: Simple Tagging.I’ve sorted one thing out … the post I kept testing with was posted from Flock & it was Flock adding the technorati links!
Doh!Forum: Plugins
In reply to: Simple Tagging.I’ve just read his website … seems that simple tags is going to be updated. I think I’ll just disable Simple tagging, cos the other worked fine.
Forum: Plugins
In reply to: Simple Tagging.I’ve had a bit more of a look … it’s only the tags in the post that default to searching technorati … those in the tag cloud search locally (in the other blog, those in the post also search locally). However, though hovering over the tag tells me there are “x” posts, it gives an error message & says it can’t find any.
I’m also not able to set it so that all the text in the cloud is the same size. I’ve set “max” & “min” both to the same number … but it still wants to set them to different sizes.I’ve also discovered that though the cloud tag & also “tags” seems to think that i’ve got tags – “mass edit” on the tag plugin option doesn’t.
…
I think I’m getting somewhere … I thought that all the tags I created were controlled by “Simple Tags”, but maybe it was the tagging in WordPress … that would explain why things aren’t working.
Any suggestions??Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: can get to admin, but not to wordpress/index.phpDoes anything in https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress give you any clues?
Do you have access to phpmy admin – or anything that will let you manually search the database?I know that when my blog had to be moved unexpectedly (due to a dead server), I had to manually edit the database to ensure that the URI was correct … everywhere! There were a few places that it wasn’t right & that was the easiest way to do it.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Issue upgradingOK
Firstly, can you remember what the URL to your blog page was before … was it “https://wwww.example.com/”, or was it “https://www.example.com/wordpress”?
If it was https://www.example.com … then you need to ensure that the newest files are in the root – so you’ll have folders such as wp-admin & files such as index.php & wp-config.php in the root.
The upgrade file is https://www.example.com/wp-admin.phpIf, however, it was https://www.example.com/wordpress before, then you’ll need to have the new files in the wordpress folder.
What I suspect has happened is that you’ve put the *new* files in the WordPress folder (probably because you uploaded the folder you just downloaded & unzipped, rather than its contents). The old files (and the wp-config) is still in the root … so, the new files can’t find the old wp-config.
I’d be inclinded to download (not delete!) the cotnents of the WordPress folder to your computer.
Then delete the folders that you had to (or, better also download them!). Now, upload your new files, making sure that things like the wp-config files are where they should be (i.e. directly in the root alongside index.php).
This time, however, DON’T put “wordpress” in the URL, just go to “yoursite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php”
