Ok, I will disable that feature for now. It still seems inaccurate when I run it against https://www.sharedcount.com/

However, I know widgets use the unofficial API, so it is probably just a rough estimate. I know google plus counters only list +1 not shares. However for social media, the higher the better.

Enabled at the stationary bar. The total shares does not add up with the individual shares.

I currently unselected total share but can reenable it if that helps.
