I’m afraid I’m ignorant about nginx. Does the conf file go into the root folder (httpdocs) like .htaccess? With shared hosting I don’t have access to any system-wide configuration.

Thanks for this advice. From looking at the template I realised that the simplest way to change the text is to edit the appropriate entries in the language files (piwik/lang/en.php for me). But I dislike hacking core files, because of the update issue that you raised. Perhaps this is an issue for Piwik rather than the WP plugin.
