In reply to: Where is the .maintenance file?Gosh, I do apologise, that was indeed bumping. However, that comment of mine that you paste above resulted from the fact that my thread had completely disappeared from the forum list. With no explanation or (as I recall) cause).
Thanks for clarifying though Andrew, it does help to know.
I still have had no joy with updating to 3.8.1. Having tried everything I am inclined to start from scratch entirely: delete database, remote site etc and pretend I am where I was last summer when I did all the setting up. Shame. I only wanted to update so I could work on content, but having spent 16 hours this week on trying to update, it’ll be quicker to call it a day and start again. Good for the grey cells though I guess.

In reply to: Where is the .maintenance file?Note to Moderator: I did not “bump” to put my thread to the top of the list, it was because I had thought of something else to type that may have been useful to any kind person that took the time to read my query. I think the difference between “bumping” and adding a PS/afterthought is evident from the content of a message.

In reply to: Just upgraded to version 3.8.1 now can't access adminHi Tiago
How would Jon (and anyone else wanting to check that this wasn’t content with their install) “run commands” in his root server?
Thanks

In reply to: Why cant I talk to anyone.Where r they“Bumping” is what they call replying to your own post, before anyone else has replied to it. It is a technique used by some people who wish to put their own thread back to the top of the list (in an attempt to be more noticeable). So, even if you have an after though, and want to write a second post as a kind of “PS…” or ” oh by the way…”, it is best not to do it, as it’ll be assumed you are “bumping”.

In reply to: Failing to update to 3.8.1Thanks. I’ve just gone to my webhoster and found it is also 755 for directories and 644 for files, so I’ve manually gone through and changed everything. Just tried again and it’s still the same message “inconsistent permissions”

In reply to: Failing to update to 3.8.1For example, could anyone tell me what File Permissions (numeric value) should be set to, and where should it be altered? I’ve tried to reset it through FTP to 644.
The message I get when I try to update is:
“The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/includes/update-core.php”Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Failing to update to 3.8.1Hello. I’m still unable to upgrade to 3.8.1. Can anyone help please? I don’t see where I am going wrong….

In reply to: Failing to update to 3.8.1Seems to be the right version. wp-includes/version.php says:
“<?php
/**
* The WordPress version string

* @global string $wp_version
*/
$wp_version = ‘3.8.1’;/**
* Holds the WordPress DB revision, increments when changes are made to the WordPress DB schema.
*
* @global int $wp_db_version
*/
$wp_db_version = 26691;/**
* Holds the TinyMCE version
*
* @global string $tinymce_version
*/
$tinymce_version = ‘359-20131026’;/**
* Holds the required PHP version
*
* @global string $required_php_version
*/
$required_php_version = ‘5.2.4’;/**

$required_mysql_version = ‘5.0’;

In reply to: Failing to update to 3.8.1Thanks for replying. I tried a manual update yesterday, but when I returned to my dashboard I still had the notification that 3.8.1 was available and I should update.
