I haven’t saved yes, but to answer your question, with the json file in place I CAN see the text there, but I will have to NOT save this and do it the way you are suggesting. Which I believe is revert to editor, delete the content, do a save. Then exit the page. Activate classic editor, then go in an add the json file while in classic editing mode. Is this correct?

I have done the process with a new page. I deactivated classic editor, reverted the page to editor, deleted the content, saved, uploaded the json file. I see the page builder layout with my row and 2 columns. So I’m by default in block mode. How can I go back to turn on classic editor without doing a save?

Update. Just saw your post. How do I do this….
“t would be best to use the page revisions system to restore a version prior to the page being saved in a Classic Block in the Block Editor.

    Likely.

I am working to add the rows and columns back to this page in classic mode to restore it.  Will try another page afterwards without saving in blocks first.

There seems to be one issue. It appears the convert to editor step destroys the rows and column I had set up in page builder completely so that when I turn classic editor back on, I can no longer edit it in classic editor with the way it was set up before in page builder. Activating page builder just creates one row and column. And…. the content box is empty. Reverting to editor restores the content, but is there no way to use page builder in blocks? When I use ‘edit in blocks’ there is no page builder fields and the content is all in one block. Hmmm.

Update: Ha, discovered the edit layout mode. But not sure what that does for me since the preview layout mode is still all in one block – so if I increase the width of a column and save, nothing happens.

OK Success. Thank you. I hope this thread will be helpful for others as well.

It’s comforting to know that even though I disabled the classic editor the front end of the other pages remains the same, and it isn’t until I go into each page… revert it to editor, delete the content and save, that each page converts to blocks. Saving and importing the json file works as it should.

Very nice. Thank you so much.

This must be template related. I went back to settings in the classic editor and clicked Block editor as ‘default for all users’, but it stayed in classic for both the page list and the pages itself, and the meta box still doesn’t do anything. Will attempt on another site with a newer theme.

    See: https://www.fireflywebs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/PageListConvert.jpg

This obviously doesn’t always work. (I’ve switched this trial to my own site now).

Also, although I see the meta option on the right side of the page, it’s not doing the convert. Clicking on the link doesn’t do anything, and ‘switch to block editor’ remains.

The only page this DOES seem to work on is the one page on my site that doesn’t have page builder activated. This page is just in the typical classic editor for the full page.

Do I need to import the json first?

OK. Getting there, thank you. In settings I now have Allow users to switch editors enabled. But on the pages list I don’t see the option, when hovering over the page title. In italics on each page line is ‘classic editor’, but no option there to change anything, or on any component of the line.

Under settings however there is a default editor for all uses which shows either classics or blocks.

OK. I’m starting to comprehend things. BUT, next question is how do I get to a ‘block editor’ with classic editor installed? I don’t see any option for that. Yes, the layout was intact when I did the ‘download layout’ as I had deactivated the ‘convert to blocks’ plugin. I assume I won’t be needing that.

    Thread Starter FireFlyWebs

    (@fireflywebs)

I had to deactivate ‘convert to blocks’ to do what you have suggested because there is no access to the classics editor or layout with this activated.   Just FYI.

The Layouts/Import/Export shows nothing, just a ‘drop import file here or select import file’.  If I just click the ‘download layout’ button with nothing selected it only gives me a home.json file

Pages do show under clone: pages.

Please stay with me here….as I’m so not clear on this yet.

The theme is this one. https://catchthemes.com/themes/lucida-pro/

They have updated it to include a feature we need for media header so that will need to be installed. It is blocks capable. (Their newer themes however will not be compatible with classic editor)

Sorry, I don’t understand. Some templates are not going to support classics, as I have understood and we need to update ours to the update for the theme. Can I not use page builder with the block editor? What do you mean “migrate a page by downloading the JSON layout” Should I disable the ‘convert to blocks’ plugin. This page:

Issue persists. Tech support with the server looked into it and stated the following”

“The error seems to be plugin related. The edit page generates Javascript errors in the console and is related to it getting stuck.

Thank you I will look at those.

But further, I can’t seem to post anything in the blocks category forum. May I place this additional question here?

Having turned off Classic Widgets and attempting to add blocks there instead (I decided to start with widgets so I can learn blocks there first) I see the classic widgets are still there (having an annoying dark purple background of my site so that I cannot read the text, and they don’t seem to be editable)….Anyway, regardless of that I have chose custom html as a block, added the html to the block and click update, but I get Error: This response is not a valid JSON response.

Nothing gets saved so I cannot get any further.

    Any suggestions?
