I had this too – empty boxes instead of icons.

I looked at the CSS, and it’s trying to target .simple-social-icons to style the links. Yet, looking at the source, the widget didn’t generate anything with that class name. So I had to manually go into my template and add a class=”simple-social-icons” to the parent element.

I’m having this same problem, even after upgrading to 1.7.

I’m halfway through resizing the thumbnails on a client’s site now. First 350 or so were successful, and the rest (5,400 and counting) have failed with the same error as above. Any idea?

I just ran into this problem too. (Regretting the fact that I upgraded this today!)

Carlos, what files/folders did you ask your host to change permissions on? I want to make the request too, but not sure exactly what to ask for. The error “Unfortunately we’re not able to chmod folders to setup folders properly” isn’t very helpful.

Yes this started happening to me too. I had set this up for a few of my clients, and I’m now going through all sites and making sure that none use this plugin. Very disappointing, since it was a plugin that seemed to actually work and suit my needs. But sending users to ads is a dealbreaker. And “D’oh” is not a suitable answer.
