Fishing For Savings

I have a sidebar question … maybe you know this too ?? I am using the free version of the theme Responsive , it has 9 widget areas , liek sidebar main, left, right, half right ect ect. NONE WORK, never have. The only ones I can add codes to and have work are the home page widget areas and MAIN sidebar. I really want my left sidebar working, I hate the look of just right side. HELP this is so nagging at me, has been for weeks ??

Im hoping I can edit my theme to be able to add the widgets elsewhere, which is probably what that link is explaining, I just , unfortunately, need a clearer explanation ?? I feel so dumb
