I just installed Simple Subscribe and it sends emails fine, though it has no way of customizing the email template. Also I uninstalled and reinstalled Subscribe2 and the same issues remain.

I’m using Email Log too. I found and unchecked “Disable email notifications is checked by default on authoring pages.”

“Preview emails should be logged if they arrive”–does this mean that they are logged after they are sent (from Subscribe2) or only after a successful delivery to the recipient? Because Subscribe2 gives me the message “Preview message(s) sent to logged in user” when I “Send Email Preview” but no email from Subscribe2 gets logged to Email Log and no email arrives in my inbox.

No, previews are not logged. No categories are excluded. I couldn’t find the “email override checkbox” on the Appearance tab though.

As digest, but the “Send Email Preview” doesn’t work either, and that was fine before as well. When I “Send Email Preview” I get the success message “Preview message(s) sent to logged in user” but the email never arrives.
