  • Add Sticky to the list of plugin problems. When its activated with 2.5 all the post disappear and a message is in the main area that says “what you’re looking for isn’t here” or some such thing. Its causing the same problem on all updates (7 test sites and three live blogs). I’ve run through every possibility I can think of… even committing the Einstein sin of doing the same thing over and over: Permalinks, new copy of Sticky, configuring Sticky in all possible ways, etc. Nothing works.

P.S. loozianajay… The problem is not Firefox. That’s the one that follows the W3C standards. The problem is with using the RICH TEXT WYSIWYG editor with embed code from YouTube. When I access your site with MSIE 7 the YouTube video skin is not visible. So the problem is greater than what you see and should be addressed from the source.

As I told you in my direct contact message, there’s a work around to avoid the plugin requirement and there are other plugins as well. If you need help with another option, let me know. Good luck.

I DL’d 2.0.6 earlier today and have since installed in on four different servers running FastCGI and two that do not run FastCGI. I had absolutely NO problem of any kind.

In the past, I had avoided 2.0.5 because of the conflict with FastCGI.

BTW: I never saw the problem as you have described it with 2.0.5. The problem I had was at sign in it responded with a message that the files had been moved because the path to wp-admin was incorrect.

The development team can take a bow now and go back to emphasizing the 5 min INSTALL. … Its slick as a whistle. Thanks to all!

Otto42 — Thanks for the tip but the argument that “the bug is in FastCGI” was made the first time I installed version 2.0.5 and I found it had no validity. There IS an incompatibility between FastCGI and WP 2.0.5, just as there are differences between MSIE, Firefox and W3C standards. In MSIE’s case people call the differences “bugs” when in fact almost all of the oddities are “choices” made by Microsoft.

miklb — You say I’m wrong in saying that 2.0.5 doesn’t install cleanly. Oh really? Remember what started this thread in the first place? And BTW, I have seven clients on seven different servers that 2.0.5 wouldn’t install on without hacking the code or installing the plugin.

But most importantly: I have made it abundantly clear for a long time that your efforts and the efforts of all WP volunteers are greatly appreciated and I stick up for you folks all the time. Even considering the postings here, WP is still the best-supported GPL-GNU project on the Net. I just have an issue with free insults being added to the mix.

As for the bug that isn’t a bug: I really don’t care whether you buy my view of the problem or whether everybody slaps me down and insist that the problem REALLY is with FastCGI. The only thing I care about is that all of your good work and the work of the others that create such terrific results not be tarnished by such a silly, miniscule problem. What matters is that the oddity be corrected in such a way that users don’t have to come to the forum just to get it up and running.

Hi HandySolo and we thank you sincerely for your response and all the work you folks put into WP. It’s greatly appreciated by me and thousands of others. However, I don’t need the plugin because I simply ignore buggy software and go on to the next task. I was trying to point out a WP problem that is causing novices to get antsy. From a PR point of view I wish Matt & Co., had withdrawn release 2.0.5 when the bug was discovered.

BTW: My site (and of course my server) has version 1.5; 2.0.1; 2.0.2; 2.0.3 and 2.0.4. running with no problems but 2.0.5 will not install cleanly. I installed 2.0.5 again this morning to see if the bug had been fix. It had not of course, but nevertheless I had it up and looked it over for a couple of hours. Then I deleted it because I didn’t want it up with the hacks I used to make it work. I’m not upset. I’ll just wait until its fixed or move on to something else… No big deal.

Again, I sincerely appreciate all the work that volunteers do because that’s what I do in my retirement. I help others get Web sites up and running… mostly for free ??

    Have a good day.

Let me add my two cents worth…

    Dear WP developers:

Version 2.0.5 DOES NOT INSTALL properly. I AM a programmer. In fact I’ve been in this business since I coded my first IBM 305 RAMAC back in 1957. WP 2.0.5. has a bug in it that gives a message after INSTAll is run. When the user tries to sign in it says the files have been moved. I can work around that, and you can work around it, but NON programmers cannot, so why get huffy with the man that is frustrated by the bug.

Just wanted to add my two cents… Same problem with ver 2.0.5 INSTALL. LOG-IN doesn’t work. Suggest staying with whatever you have until problem is resolved.
