And fyi moshu, I was using pure htmls to run my site before switching to wp. I want to leave them where they are (file name intact too) because the search engines list all of them, but now I want them to reflect the new look of my site.

I’ll look into frames I guess.

Yes. I write about news articles, and I’d rather just have the title of my post point to the article. That way I won’t have to make a separate link in the body of the post.

I installed Redirectify but I don’t know how it works.

See, when I first installed wp, I made 3 pages and no posts.

Then I look in manage->categories->default category, and it lists the number of posts as 3. So I thought there was a problem with my install, that my wp was confused or broken. I was under the impression that pages were completely separate entities than posts, so I expected my default category to list the number of posts as 0.

But you’re saying a page is actually just a specially-handled default category post, so that means my install is just fine.

Okay, I looked at the file perm’s on my host, and all files are 644, and all folders are 755.

Good?

And Cypher, regarding /wp-content…
IF it is the case that a plugin needs more permission, what number would the file perm need to be, and could I just enable that perm long enough to get the plugin to activate and configure, and then set the file perm back?

Let me clarify – when I make a “page” it gets counted in the default category. When I make a post, everything’s fine.

I want to know if that’s a bug, a bad install on my part, or if it’s normal.

I mean, “pages” aren’t supposed to be in a category at all, right?

Right on, podz – apparently, that template didn’t include a page.php…

Not to worry, the site I’m practicing on is not live, and I prefer to learn by fully understanding all the built in stuff first. If I hose this thing, uninstalling and reinstalling will be a snap. (My host has wp available via automated install script in fantastico)

Well, a false ping is not so bad, right?

It just means the service will check your site for a post that’s not up yet.

And when I advance-date a post, and it pings, that post won’t show up in the rss feed yet, right?
