I have not touched CSS or HTML code ever and i think the theme i used has what you are after. its called mistylook by sadish. go to https://www.whitehallpost.co.uk to see it in action.

its got an inbuilt widget plugin, so you can put any categorires/lists or plugins on the right.

on your dashboard go to ‘Comments’ which opens two sub titles,: ‘awaiting moderation’ and ‘akismet’

check and see if one of these have a (1) next to is, if so click open and it just needs approving.

im affraid i can’t specifically help, but if you have only just started your website. then you could choose to use a different theme, as some themes have the plugin alreday installed.

for example i use mistylook by sadish, all i had to do was resize a picture to fit the same dimensions as the header and, upload.

I am no expert, but are you running IE6? because this has caused problems with some aspects of WordPress.
