  • Would you be able to start a brand new topic, i know you have the exact same problem but the reason to start a new topic is because different versions of WordPress and different server setups can result in similar problems but have different causes.

Try to give details of what you were doing before the website stopped working and if you recently changed any settings or downloaded any new plugins, or changed something somewhere. the more info the better ??

Liveroomescapes problem seems to illude me so yours may be different, however we have found a work around. By changing the permalink settings to default WordPress is able to direct the user to the exact page ID that the menu items link to.

are you having the exact same problem Urgableh? did you recently update to WordPress 3.9?

the .htaccess file is located in the root directory which is where all the WordPress files sit on your server. usually it is accessed by using a FTP program like FileZilla.

FTP access is where you can look at the files and folders that make up WordPress and your website on the server itself.

To delete .htaccess file requires FTP access, do you happen to know if you have FTP access to your website?

One would need to access FTP and WordPress in order to complete this task.

I’d be happy to give it a go for you or i can walk you through step by step its up to you, which would you prefer?, don’t post your password details here. Contact me via email: greataussiepie at hotmail dot com

I just tried to replicate the problem on my WordPress. What i did was i delete my .htaccess file and this caused all of my pages to return a 404 not found, only my home page worked.

I decided to delete my .htaccess file and then I went to admin area: Settings > Permalinks and changed it to default, and saved changes
I then changed my permalinks back to the setting i wanted which is custom:/%category%/%postname%/

I then went into my FTP and checked to see if the .htaccess file had been recreated by WordPress, and it had been. now all my pages are working again.

This may seem like we are repeating the last steps i asked you to, but in this case the major difference is that we are first deleting the .htaccess file. Please make a backup of the .htaccess file just in case

Let me know how it goes, i hope this works

It sounds like your WordPress is having an issue with the .htaccess file and permalinks. I found some advice on stackoverflow.com

for these instructions to work WordPress must be able to write to your .htaccess file, give this a try let me know how it goes.

if you was using permalinks other than the default such as Day and name, Month and name, Numeric, Post name or Custom Structure, you only need to

    • Login to your admin area: Settings > Permalinks which should be : https://yoursite.com/wp-admin/options-permalink.php
    • Choose Default permalink setting, then save changes
    • Then you can return it again to your other previous permalink choice or keep it as default as yo wish

Note that this problem can happen when you move your site from a domain or location to another one.

    No Worries ?? You’re welcome

@liveroomescape I will take a look at your topic now.

    Hi Liverroomescape,

Can you please share the link to your website?

I am not sure what the problem is, having a look may give me a better idea. If you are able to give me some more details that would also be helpful.

    DNS and DNS Propagation:

So DNS means Domain Name Server and there are heaps and heaps of them all around the world. when you register a new domain name it has to ‘propagate’ to all of the DNS servers around the world and this takes time, sometimes 72 hours or longer and during the time the website will be available from some places but not other places, depending on your physical location on earth.

This is a natural thing that occurs every time someone registers a new domain or they tell their hosting provider to point their domain name to a new server.

    @uber2046

After googling all i could find is that some hosts do block individual computers if they send too many requests too quickly, and on a particular forum this one particular person who generally had 13 tabs open would get blocked for 30 minutes and then he could access the site again. this kind of sounds similar to your situation. It turned out the host was blocking him because his browser was making too many connection requests, but everyone agreed that 13 tabs should not produce too many requests and that it was still a mystery.

Sorry i can’t help, hope the info above steers you in the right direction, maybe give your host a call or shoot em an email?

Those errors prevent me from looking.

Are you saying that the errors shown above are displayed when you are using WordPress and when you are in your hosting control panel from where you can install WordPress and other similar scripts/applications?

Oh ok, no worries most us know what you mean ??

If you only organised the domain name and hosting last night than the issue may be related to DNS propagation. I’m not a coder but i would guess that if your website has not fully propagated through the web yet, than as you use WordPress somethings will work and other things may not work because your computer simply can’t always find the website or make a connection. I have experienced this before during the time it takes a website to propagate fully (72 hours or more) the website is intermittently accessible and then not accessible, i’m guess that in your case you can access it but its not working properly yet. I could be completely wrong, but hopefully the problem just goes away in another day or 2.

    Hi Liveroomescape,

Happy to help with any issue. Can you please start a brand new topic and describe what you were doing and what WordPress settings you changed before the site stopped working. thanks.

I dont know anything about them cause i haven’t used them yet, but iv been hearing good things about wpengine.com they are a web hosting company that focus primarily on WordPress sites. i doubt you would ever get any of these problems on their servers.

plus they have specialised WordPress support staff that would solve an issue like this quicksmart, a regular hosting company doesn’t necessarily have the best hosting environment for WordPress, some are better than others.

    I love WordPress too ??
