In reply to: must plugins always be active?I know I can do a trial and error but that could give random results–works this time but not later on. Pretty time consuming to check every function on a site for every plugin. I would think somewhere in the documentation or in some hidden file, it would tell you this is “required” for functioning and not just design or setup.

In reply to: must plugins always be active?Thank you both, Wudman & Toufiqur
I have tried to keep my plugins to a minimum but now, the question becomes, which ones are necessary? I only have 15 total, one is Pro version of theme (A), two are Elementor related (A), eight are WooCommerce (4 A, 4 I), Duplicator (A) for backups, MailMunch, Smush & Yoast all (I). The inactive (I) ones are only turned off because of the issues. Haven’t had the patience yet to go through the process of turning the rest back on to finish finding the culprit. Where do I find out which ones are “necessary”?Thanks

In reply to: make site portal for guestsThank you, Cais.
I again did not receive not that there was a response so I apologize for not thanking you sooner. I should have been more clear about the registration. I would set up their account and have their login be simple, say first name and phone number. Then have them see only the registered guest information. We have an instruction brochure for guests with things like wifi password included but I’d like to have it accessible electronically. We supply a chromebook with some stuff but could do so much more if we can have a “Reserved” for guests area on our site.
Will take a look at some subscription plug ins to see if any will accomplish this.
Thanks again.Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Installing WordPress without cPanelThank you all and I apologize for the delay in responding. Box is checked to receive notices but haven’t ever. My host has created several folders on our account, a backup of our oldest version, a new folder with files for https and a new folder with mysql for the new WP site. The older folders will go away once I go live with WP. The senior web designer at my host is not a great fan of WP even to the point of disparaging it, especially the ‘moving’ of it. I have already completed several packages with Duplicator just as backup and tests and it was their term of ‘run’ that I was referring to. So, if the name doesn’t matter, I guess I’m good. Thank you all again.

In reply to: Installing WordPress without cPanelA further question on this issue, if I may. I named my build site and database, vaudeville3 (fourth attempt at learning WP). Our domain is vaudeville.org. I recently tried to change development site name to the dot org in anticipation of going live with disastrous results. Everything disappeared (had followed advice I found on forum). Finally got everything back after several frustrating days. Host says they can change our domain pointer so I’ve asked and am waiting for an answer to: does it matter what the name of my file is? I ask the same question here. They’ve already plunked a database into a new folder so all I should have to do is run a Duplicator package via ftp.
Thank you WP for your response and thank anyone that responds to the second part of this issue.

In reply to: finding the right galleryThank you. Again.
The photo is the main “attraction” with the text being a 1-300 teaser word profile of the performer. This, hopefully, leading folks to buy a copy of the original article as published. I had steered away from this being any sort of posting site. If we allowed postings, we would be inundated with requests, “My grandfather was a headliner with Milton Berle; tell me about him.” If I ‘post’ all these entries, can I then turn off posting? Categorizing these performers would be difficult; a lot of categories and some folks would be in several categories. I think an alphabetical sorting of the posts would be an awfully long scroll, as bad as what I was getting giving each performer a block/section.
I will give it a try and play around with postings but it seems to me there must be a gallery out there that will do what I need. Perhaps I’ll try and see what casting agencies use. Would a gallery be listed in a page source?
New food for thought so thank you.Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: should I learn how to install WP or pay host?Thank you. Just thought you might have a hint on the WP end; some quirky hidden menu item or something. I’m finding things are not always where I would expect them to be. I never expected you to do anything other than offer advice or hints. Guess I will blow away attempt #3 and try one more import. If it doesn’t work, I’ll build myself. Finding some really good, helpful videos on YouTube.
Thanks again.

In reply to: should I learn how to install WP or pay host?Hi Joy,
Used recommended plug-in and now have 267 pages but they don’t seem to be ‘connected’ to site. Windows showing the pages and check boxes next to all. only options once checked is under bulk actions, trash, edit. NOthing I do gets the pages into real editable pages.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: E-commerce and portfolio pluginsThank you, I had been looking at some of these themes earlier but had started working with Hoot Du, which is not in this search but in looking at specs it does work “out of the box with Jetpack”. So, will give that a shot. So far not seeing anything on importing these 200 profiles. They are on the website and in a Publisher file and will be murder to pull indvidually.
I’ve got two “Dummies” ebooks but wonder if you have any recommendations for online tutorials. At this stage of my befuddlement, I don’t mind paying if it’s good. Estimate for rebuild of our site was six grand. That, is way out of the question.
But again, thank you for the info and quick response.

In reply to: should I learn how to install WP or pay host?Thank you, Joy. I’ve just managed to do a set up on my pc so I guess I will give it a try. With nearly 250 pages, I think I’m faced with rebuilding, not migrating. And our host offers no support of WP.
Thanks again. I’m sure I’ll be back.
