Thanks for that response, whooami. But once again, a helpful response to one of my queries demonstrates that I did a horrible job stating the issue! So let me clarify.

I figured the error message was a permission error and had nothing to do with the integrity of the backup.

But it prevents me from doing what I want to do, which is to do a “restore database” procedure so I can see that it works.

I don’t understand why you would say that “there is no reason to” verify the backup. If my settings are wrong when I did the export so that the database cannot be restored, I’d sure like to know that before I have to do an actual restore to replace a corrupterd database. Am I missing something?

    Thanks.

Thanks for these tips. Brian, your backup script looks like a great idea, but I’m not sure I can use it with my host.

Since I posted this question yesterday, I have installed sevral plug-ins. I want to make sure those plug-ins and their settings are preserved.

So your suggestion to back-up wp-contents makes sense. But what should I backup to make sure I have all my Dashboard settings saved?

    ccoupe,

Thank you, that was it exactly — an ioncomplete install. When I used Fetch (FTP cl;ient) instead of the ftp client built into my hosting provider’s control panel, all of the files transfered and I now have (apparently) a full dashboard. Thanks.
