Well I have to say thank you and “you are the man”.
I deactivated all plugins and checked and it has the correct page. I activated them one by one but this did not reproduce the problem.
However I looked at the redirects log for 404 errors and this showed problems and some calls to flatastic.
This is obviously an avenue to pursue to see if they persist once I clear the logs and check again.

the folder in themes relating to flatastic has been deleted. and I checked through ftp.
In appearances it is looking at twenty sixteen and indeed when you click on a link it shows this theme. It is just when you call the website you get the bad page.
within admin when I click on “go to site” it is correct twenty sixteen.
I even deleted wp-super-cache in case this was causing a problem as it showed 1.html and 2.html with the bad page.
I am going to sleep now and maybe the fairies will have fixed it for me.

Hi there
I have deleted the flatastic theme and activated the twenty sixteen theme as suggested.
When I look at appearances, customise I see the new theme and have added a logo.
When I exit admin and close my browser to clear the cache then open it again to look at the site I see the unstructured page with old VC / flatastic influences. Within that basic screen there are links to other pages and they are in twenty sixteen theme layout.
This is why I think there must be an over ride but I cannot find it.
sorry if this is a pain but it has me baffled.

I have removed all VC content plus renamed the page to no avail. it still loads the strange screen

I have changed the theme and looking at it internally it looks as it should. But I exit the admin side it still shows the odd screen.

This is why I think there must be a bit of code over-riding as if VC still existed but I do not know where to look

funny thing is when I looked for the debug in the options I suddenly saw that my settings had been reset to default – so the blocking was back to 20 instead of 2 (I am the only admin person)

Many thanks for your reply. I did this on one site and it worked. On another site despite setting it to 20 it still said that it has exceeded 30 so this value must be somewhere else. I removed the tick on “scan file contents for backdoors, trojans “etc and it then worked. I would immediately leap to the malware idea except that it still shows 30. Is this the result of the latest update 5.3.5 as it did not appear before then. The scan seems to hang until killed.
Any ideas anyone?

Well thanks to Barnez I immediately blocked admin and this seems to have done the job as I am not now getting plagued with all the logging attempts ALTHOUGH some other wordpress sites where I have not done this have gone quiet as well so maybe the ISP’s have managed to smash these attempts.
At last look there were over 11,369 attacks per minute so looks like there is still major activity out there. My concern is still what effect it has on the server load with all these login attempts.

exactly what I have tried and experienced. Surely the wordpress security network can do something about this. It seems to be a wholesale attack blasted out everywhere. Any response from the security guys?

I do not think this has been resolved as a scan a few hours ago threw up this message. One major question I have is if you take the remove option does it affect the wordfence / wordpress plugin and cause problems?
By the way I love the wordfence plugin.

There I was thinking it was me when other people seem to be having the same problem. I agree it used to be on the bottom of each page. Maybe the latest update killed it off. Glad I found the plugin before all the trolls bombarded me with spam

Thanks for your reply. I have found these in the past on another theme but no comments box appears in the page. seems a bit odd to select then deselect but will bear that in mind later. I have managed to remove the comments link by loading a plugin to deselect comments and it has now disappeared. Hammer to crack a nut but obviously needed.

found the problem – just goes to prove you should dig further before yelling for help although previous posts were of help.
It was a picture that did not have the comments unticked. Just goes to show you are always learning.
