Wanted to say that I had the exact same problem and was grateful to see the fix worked (reinstalling 5.1.7, deactivating it, and then updating to 5.1.8 while it was deactivated). I don’t have Hummingbird and am not on A2 hosting, but do have Wordfence Premium, in case that helps.

I have the same issue. The spaces appear after user-created titles (such as: Page Title I Made | ?Site Titlexxxxx) where the spaces are x. Sometimes there is only one space, but other times many. After deleting them and saving the page, they reappear. I started noticing them only because the character count seemed too high on one of my page titles, and I realized that the spaces were being counted in the page title character tally.

It seems that the problem exists on any page or post where I didn’t use the generic “post title” or “page title” tag but instead wrote my own title, generally because the exact title was too long. That’s hundreds of pages, and I am frantically changing them, but I seem to have lost hundreds of customizations since November or December. Plus, I have tons of pages with identical titles and descriptions (wrong ones) in Google. It’s a nightmare. What to do?

I don’t think my problem had anything to do with Autoptimize. I still don’t know why the white screens happened, but it was resolved when I added a new category archive page in the child theme. No idea why it needed that, but it worked!
Since the same time, I have had an issue with random 404 pages on existing pages on the site that are resolved only by clearing Cloudflare cache. They’re inconsistent and only occasional, but I see them and so do visitors. I had been clearing Autoptimize cache because it was filling up every two days until I read it wasn’t a good idea, so I thought maybe that was the culprit. To fix that, I followed instructions from your support pages and it no longer fills up. But even after clearing all site caches, this 404 error has continued sporadically. It likely isn’t an Autoptimize problem, but thought I would ask in case…would 404’s happen on an existing html page if Autoptimize cache had been cleared frequently in the past? Even after clearing other site caches?

I do realize that wp-admin links should be blocked and shouldn’t be indexed. However, these messages showed up after upgrading the AIOSEO plugin to the 4 version. I have been online for 20 years and have never received such a message that wp-admin links (a lot of them) were being indexed but blocked, so I assumed it was the result of this plugin upgrade? The only sitemap I use is through this plugin.
I put in the code you provided in a custom functions plugin to avoid having to change my theme’s function page that I don’t want to touch. It didn’t work, unfortunately. Does it absolutely have to be in the theme’s function? Is it at all possible to be able to exclude some post types in the regular way in a future update? I never had this problem before the upgrade. I had only posts and pages selected in the options, and that worked just fine.
Even more importantly, I seemed to have lost all of my meta content for my pages and posts, which are in the thousands. I reverted to 3.7 but need to know how to resolve this problem before updating the plugin to 4.0. I was a paying customer for the professional version but for some reason, to sign up so that I can get support, it’s prompting me to make a new account and pay again? What happens to customers who have already paid if they need support with the newer version? Thank you so much for your help.
