When editing comment attributes in the dashboard, I get no failure message; it just reloads and silently discards my changes.

It works if I do it from the front-end, as noted. Sounds like the same issue.

Happy to have found this thread! I just spent an hour straight combing through my plugins, trying to figure out which one was secretly a second email subscription manager. Jetpack, eh? Too many features, too much turned on by default. ??

Yes, @cyonite appears to be right. I’m just noting that the plugin enforces a silly constraint.
