In reply to: WordPress vs. SharePointThere may be increased interest in how / whether to integrate these two given last year’s launch of Office 365 including Sharepoint cloud services fairly inexpensively.
I’ve seen a number of posts from people wondering about the benefit of running WP externally and Sharepoint internally. Gabe’s post above recognizes these strengths but can / how to integrate them?

I mostly follow.
Can you point me to a description of special page numbers like ‘128’, and ‘039’? Is there something in the codex? I couldn’t find it.

In reply to: Do Theme Changes Affect Plug In?Good to know David!
What is easiest for nontech person to do when changing themes with different sidebar file names? Must one uninstall and reinstall the widget?

In reply to: Do Theme Changes Affect Plug In?Thanks for your reply David!
Upon some more checking through forum, I noticed others lost widgets when changing themes. I have been thinking about my question some more. Please let me know if I am on the right track.
My understanding is that widgets are functions that display on the site. Plug ins are system dependent applications installed by an administrator. Plug ins might or might not be widgets. Themes define and format what is displayed. Themes and plug ins are independent if the plug in is not a display function but interdependent if it is a widget. If it is a widget, changing to a new theme would require that the theme support it or coding would be necessary to continue to use it.
Does that sound right?

In reply to: Problems with Easy 5 Minute WordPress Installation on WindowsThanks for your thoughts Jason! I think I may be coming to the same conclusion. It was never the cost, just working ease and speed. Focusing on development is sounding attractive.

In reply to: Problems with Easy 5 Minute WordPress Installation on WindowsHi esmi,
Well, I’ve been struggling and learning and struggling.
I ran that microsoft Web Installer Platform app a few more times. Sure, wish I was more careful the first time through, all might have gone smoothly.
I have collected a few recommendations to install packages using the Apache hosting service – XAMPP and now easyPHP. I believe they all require that I turn off the microsoft IIS service which I am hesitant to do because I have a DreamWeaver installation which I think uses it successfully but not sure if my reasoning is sound or not.
Anyway, back to the WIP install. Each of the last times through I wind up with an installation error for MySQL Windows Essential 5.1 saying that it couldn’t install. Here it is from the log:
DownloadManager Information: 0 : Install exit code for product ‘MySQL Windows Essential 5.1’ is 7
DownloadManager Error: 0 : Install return code for product ‘MySQL Windows Essential 5.1’ is Failure (The security settings cannot be applied.)
DownloadManager Information: 0 : Product MySQL Windows Essential 5.1 done install completedFrom what I can tell, something seems to be wrong with my password but I’m not sure what. I have been careful during installation to keep track of the password that I set up at the beginning to use again towards the end.
Anyway, I am able to open the WordPress program locally. Is there a way to test it to determine if there is anything wrong with it? Especially the SQL data base functionality? I didn’t see any testing procedure in the forum.
thanks much

In reply to: Problems with Easy 5 Minute WordPress Installation on WindowsI have intentions to develop a CMS from scratch for a small busines using WP.
I posted your question to the forum a couple of days ago. The advice that I received was that it made sense to do development work locally for ease and speed of machine response then move to commercial host when ready to go public.
Your thoughts?
I will look into the xampp for windows link.

In reply to: Develop CMS on Own Machine B4 Hosting?Mike, Thanks for your advice. It’s very clear. I’m trying to follow your advice and install locally.
Esmi, I read over the articles on installing and moving WP. It seems that, in theory, this should not be a problem.
but help! once more if you can.
I am having trouble with my WP installation. My “5 minute windows install” is in it’s fourth hour. I started a new thread on it.
See: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/problems-with-easy-5-minute-wordpress-installation-on-windows?replies=0#postformI realize this is a more technical request than the “big picture” guidance that I have been seeking to date. Hope you can bear with me.

In reply to: Should beginner start with WP.com to build CMS blog? Thanks James! I appreciate your advice.
I had read the article that you provided in your link a number of times. It seems to lay out the pros and cons of the .com vs. .org options clearly. The challenge, of course, is to weigh the costs and benefits of each approach in the context of one’s own needs and capabilities without the capacity to really understand the implications.
Ultimately, the choice might best be made by an experienced person with sufficient understanding of one’s situation and the likely costs and benefits of the two options making a simple recommendation. That’s what you’ve done James.
Thanks again!
