  • I just had this happen for the second time. My .htaccess was truncated in the middle of the last Rewrite Rule, and the error logs were giving a repeated error “Invalid command ‘Rew’, perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration”. I concluded that it must be Wordfence as I haven’t seen any other plugin writing to .htaccess.

It happened 2 or 3 weeks ago as well, to a different site. I keep my plugins up to date.

I’m having a very similar problem as you describe on MediaTemple GS. Have you learned anything more about the problem?

I just went to Settings > TinyMCE Advanced and reconfigured the toolbars.

Woah, just happened to me too! Thanks for such a quick response all!

Me too. I finally just used the YouTube embed code, as it was for just one video on the whole site.

Lately I can see the PDFs I’ve embedded if I’m logged into Google. If I switch to a different browser, or am not logged in, I don’t see the PDF. So I’m guessing that Google changed something (in the API?) and maybe the plugin needs to be changed to accommodate this. You may need to communicate with Google about it, if you haven’t already. Thanks.

The frontend of my site is fine. When I try to access the backend, i.e. /wp-admin, I get the following, whether logged in or not:

Warning: require_once(/[path]/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/W3/NewRelicService.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /[path]/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/inc/define.php on line 1435

    Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '[path]/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/W3/NewRelicService.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php:/[path]/wp-content/plugins/mailchimp-widget/lib') in /[path]/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/inc/define.php on line 1435

I am deleting the plugin and cache files via FTP as I cannot access the backend at all. I will wait until I hear that it’s working before reinstalling. And I’ll not update the plugin on other sites.

I’m having the same problem, and have tried atorreno’s fixes and some other things but no luck. I have to give up for today. I’ll watch for updates and other options. ??

Could it depend on the host? DB permissions on some subtle level? …

I just changed my username to admin directly in the database, dropped the 2 out of 6 extra tables I had obtained, logged out and in, restored the original config file and .htaccess file and started over, following the directions. Now I have the Super Admin button AND all the new tables in the database.

And I’m a little more adept with all this, which is what I really wanted.

So despite WP’s efforts to allow people use a name other than “admin” for security reasons, there are times when it might work better, depending on still unknown factors.

Thanks for being there, especially Andrea_r. See you again, I’m sure.

Definitely, yes, in my case too.

I think the permissions must be there because it worked the first time, except that subdomains showed up which I didn’t want. Then I tried to erase all my steps, but it looks like I missed something so it didn’t “take”. I think I should start again from scratch. Restore the original config file, drop the extra tables, log out, log in a couple of times, make sure that it knows I really am admin – or need I go back to a fresh install of WordPress? Are there any other places where the network is “registered” (I’m comparing it to a registry entry on a computer)?

    Vive les canadiennes !

I don’t see a wp_sitemeta table. In wp_options, admin_email is mine, in wp_users I have ID 1, in wp_usermeta I have user level 10. Those all pertain to the main blog, though, don’t they? Nothing seems to be “meta” to that, except for wp_blogs and wp_blog_versions.

Logged in as “heather” or “Heather”, the only admin-level user, I do not see the “network” menu item that I saw before (I think that would be the right English term; in French it’s “réseau”) but at the top of the menu, under the dashboard button, I get “My sites” (mes sites), which suggests to me that the network is enabled but I’m not super admin anymore. Perhaps I had too many tabs open and didn’t log out and in with the right sequence, or something like that.

In phpMyAdmin I see tables for wp_blogs and wp_blog_versions.

Under wp_user_capabilities, I am a:1:{s:13:”administrator”;b:1;} and wp_user_level 10. If I change (one of) these, will it mess things up? What would I change them to exactly?

(I suppose I should have done the trial run in English, but I need to learn the French vocabulary so I can teach the teachers to use it!)

Me again. I tried it again the next day and it was fine! No problems now. I didn’t try deactivating any plugins, change the theme or anything, but thanks for the suggestions. I had just started using the audio-player plugin at the time, and at first thought it was interfering. But it was a problem with other pages too, ones without audio. Perhaps it was a matter of something lingering in the cache from setting up the plugin…. a mystery still.
