Update! The plugin works now if I update the phpseclib directory within wp-content/plugins/ssh-sftp-updater-support with the version 1.0 from https://github.com/phpseclib/phpseclib/. I did this using

curl -L -o phpseclib-new https://github.com/phpseclib/phpseclib/archive/1.0.zip
unzip phpseclib-new
mv phpseclib-1.0/phpseclib wp-content/plugins/ssh-sftp-updater-support/

Could someone update the plugin with the latest phpseclib-1.0/phpseclib folder?

Oh, and this gives some useful code to implement this feature in php.

I guess I could alter my personal copy of the code, but if it’s useful for anyone else, putting it into the main trunk seems sensible .

Re brackets/superscripts: it might be worth sticking this example in the documentation, as I imagine it’s a common thing to want to do in the physical sciences. I guess you can also turn that into superscripts, by using <sup>? Is there any way to make them alphabetical (a,b,c,d, etc) – i.e. an %alpha% equivalent of %num%?

I might be missing something, but I don’t think the numbers (or letters) turn up in the end-of-text bibliography when I do this.
