    This is not helpful, and your directions are inaccurate, unfortunately. The problem is not creating a child theme, but rather that Alante Blue is already a child theme and WordPress does not support grandchild themes.

    I solved this issue myself and have come to call it a “sibling theme”.

    Here’s how:

    1) I copied the entire alante-blue folder and renamed it to custom-theme.
    2) I edited the comment header in style.css in my custom-theme directory with a new title, author, and link (NOTHING else)
    3) I copied all of the custom settings from Customizer in my original Alante Blue theme (custom CSS, theme options, background color, slider settings, etc). This had to be done manually by copy/paste to a note pad.
    4) After activating the new theme, I went into Customizer again and updated all of the custom settings as they were on the original theme.
