Their plugin is called “Penci PenNews AMP – WordPress Complete AMP” and I’m guessing only comes bundled with their themes.

Is the site where you tried your solution not reading an external CSS for this?

The authors of the theme say it’s because Jetpack creates another avatar and there’s no option to remove it.

I’ve checked and the option for also showing them in AMP is deactivated.

Remote debugging is active now.

The avatar duplication when Jetpack’s lazy load is activated also happens in my site.

I tried linking to it so that you could see, but my comment was very silently flagged as spam and promptly deleted. ??

Also tried that but doesn’t work either.

That’s already in the CSS, so nope.
