I have exactly the same issue. On a page with a lot of hyperlinks (about 50 images and few more text links links) the new code causes a delay of up to 10 seconds for each image when moving a cursor around. This is with all plugins disabled under wordpress 4.8.1. There was absolutely no problems editing the same page under WordPress 4.7.*

I should clarify – this is not about adding new image size to WP. This is about selecting the defaults for an image when it is inserted into the post in the editor.
