Sigh. Never mind. Best way to fix a problem is apparently to contact support. A minute or two after posting this I found the setting. For anyone else unable to see something right in front of their face here it is….

Admin Page -> Settings -> Discussion

Under “Other comment settings”

“Show comments cookies opt-in checkbox.”

I can only laugh at myself.

I did some testing and the problem seems to be related to the database. I removed the toolbox tables and did a clean install of the plugin. The plugin installs but the tables don’t get created. So I did a mysqldump from another site where I have a working version, changed the table prefix, and loaded it into the site where I have toolbox version 7.2 installed. With the import of the tables the toolbox seems to work. So no idea what broke in 7.2.

Ok it seems the problem is that Simple Optimizer is not compatible with php 5.5.x. The reason is that Simple Optimizer uses straight php mysql commands instead of using the db functions that come with WordPress. Mysql functions are depreciated in php 5.5.x and Mysqli is the new standard. This is something the author of this plugin should consider updating/fixing.

Fail: I failed to notice that apparently the Feed to Post plugin became deactivated and that is why my content wasn’t updating correctly. Sigh. Thanks for all your help Jean. I appreciate you taking the time.

Agreed. Complete disaster. And it does not play well with BPS Security. It is a shame too because BPS and Better WP were such a great combo. I tried iThemes Security out on one of my sites and it was such a complete wreck. It is getting uninstalled from all of my sites. It is no good the way this thing messes up .htaccess.
