Strange. The reason I posted this was that it was previously working if you have selected one of the variants as the default product. Regarding your suggestion this would be a lot of work as there are many variants. But you have given me an idea which I will try along similar lines.
Below is the output which I was able to upload to google merchant with reviews for default products a few months ago.

It would appear that the owner of the site correctly set Stock Status to “out of stock” but also de-selects the Enabled check box therefore “out of stock” products do not appear in the feed at all and that’s why I am not seeing any items shown as “out of stock” in the feed.
