In reply to: [Expressions] custom sidebarsKevin, this is getting strange.
You say that the number of sidebars is fixed, and cannot have a name change. So the sidebars are hard coded, not variable.
If I open a page, and go down to sidebar, I can select sidebars as you say. However, I clicked on the “enter new” just below the selection box, and the box became empty, and I typed in a name for a sidebar. I saved that, and then I had 12 sidebars. I’ve done that twice more, and now I have 14 sidebars. however, having done that, now I can only select one of the “new” sidebars for a page, the standard ones are no longer in the drop down selection box.
If you wish, take a look. Do you still have the admin log in information?
I am fairly certain that before I added the first “new” sidebar, I could select any of your standard ones for a page, but now only the new ones. I haven’t tested to see how many of them I can create. Plus, now I don’t know if something can blow up at me because it appears I am doing something you did not intend. If this works without any nasty side effects [pun intended], then your theme can support all the sidebars a user could want – possibly.
Am I screwing things up???
Regards,
GeorgeForum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: [Expressions] custom sidebarsUnfortunately, Kevin, I have no experience whatever with HTML coding. I am limited to WYSIWYYG changes only.
I created a new sidebar by going to a page, then down to sidebar, then “enter new.” I can then use that sidebar on any page, but can’t change it’s name, or delete it. You are right, the name does not show up anywhere, so it really does not matter, only for easily understanding the purpose of that sidebar.
I really appreciate your inputs. Being new at this, I feel like I am swimming my way through jello.
regards,

In reply to: [Expressions] custom sidebarsHi Kevin:
Thank you – that gets me over a hurdle. May I ask another question [or 2]?How do I delete an added sidebar? Just to test, I added a new sidebar to a page. If I can’t delete it [not just remove from page], how can I rename it?
Can I rename any of the standard sidebars?
Thank you most kindly,
GeorgeForum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: 2 questions about the Expressions themeThank you. I really wasn’t sure if this was a theme issue, or a general one.

In reply to: 2 questions about the Expressions themeI thought I stated that in the title, but the title seems to have disappeared.
Anyway, it is Expressions, and I got it from the WP.org site.Forum: Plugins
In reply to: [Simple Page Sidebars] Newbie help neededBrady, I am feeling really stupid about now.
could I pay you to set up one page for me so I can see what all of the settings must be?
I am just going in circles, and wasting time. no matter what I do, the only sidebar that shows up is the default. I added a blank text widget there just to eliminate the warning I was getting about adding something to it.
Thank you kindly,

In reply to: [Simple Page Sidebars] Newbie help neededBrady, thank you for the very fast response!
Unfortunately, I am in a bit over my head right now.
I went back to settings/reading and set the default sidebar as sidebar_1.
Then I went to appearance and moved a Meta to sidebar_1 [I called it “join”]. In the list of pages, now I see “Join” under sidebar for the page I selected. I think so far, so good.
But now how do I edit “join” to be what I need? That may be the step I am not understanding. I have looked everywhere, and I do not see how to modify the empty meta widget, or do anything with it. Basically, I need text and an image with an attached link in this sidebarForum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: How to remove comments? The site is https://www.univent.org/inventonomics
Right now, the theme is Alexandria, but I have tried several themes, all having the same result.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: controlling page contentActually, this problem is not theme-centric. I have tried a number of themes now, and all of them have the comments, reply, etc text and box on them. Nothing seems to disable that.
Does anyone have any idea how to completely get rid of comments and replies from all pages? Under settings/discussions, I have everything unchecked. I have nearly turned off everything hoping to find the trigger to get rid of this, but to no avail.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: controlling page contentI will post on theme forum, but FYI, I have everything unchecked on settings/discussions, and still pages keep coming up with the comments, reply and comment box stuff. It just will not go away!

In reply to: How to remove comments?Hello:
That “allow comments” IS unchecked, and still I get the items above.
also curious, On most pages the postings I put into the text box show as they should. On one page, nothing I do causes the text to show up on the page. All settings are the same for this “odd” page, and yet it is missing the comment related items, as well as any text I put in.Unfortunately I have no experience with using CSS, thatr will involve reading to get up to speed there.

In reply to: 3.6 – new type of torture?Problem found! First, what I did.
HI Bem:
I did what you said. First, I clicked on one of the common settings, and clicked save. On suggestion from someone else, I moved the htaccess file to my root folder [mysite.com], where the WP is installed in mysite.com/WP. When I hit save, it did something to the htaccess file, but I still cannot get any pages. Not being sure what you meant by “option”, I then tried adding something to the category base line, then saves. I also copied the htaccess file into the WP folder. That did not update either of the ht files, and I still cannot get any pages.
I am lost at this point. I thought I was being abundantly safe by downloading the entire WP folder [about 40 megs worth] before doing the update. I thought I could then just reverse the process.
Again, everything works inside WP, I don’t see anything that appears different, and I can do whatever I want. It’s just that I can’t get pages, even if I address them directly – mysite.com/WP/index.php
The above didn’t fix it, so I first disabled all plugins. Didn’t help
I might mention that S2member is one of the plugins that was active. Then I updated the Theme I was using – Alexandria. Didn’t help.
Then, finally, I changed themes to 2012. Ah Ha! The pages now appear as they should. The problem is that Alexandria works with 3.5, not 3.6, and not with 3.5 if it is reloaded on the server. Does that make any sense????
So now I have to select a new theme, and start from scratch because I lost all setting relating to the theme. But at least, after 6 days of pulling my hair out, I can move forward.
Other had suggested that I deactivate plugins, and change themes, but I only dropped the plugins. I didn’t see how the theme could block access to pages.
But Bem, your suggestion, after that didn’t work, made me desperate enough that I was willing to try the unreasonable – change themes.
Thank you Bem, and all.

In reply to: 3.6 – new type of torture?Thank you. I got a warning about that, and allowed it to update the DB.
I am assuming that it set the DB version correctly. I am not familiar with manipulating the DBs.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: 3.6 – new type of torture?I should have mentioned on my last post, I can log in [as I could before], and I can modify pages and save them. Everything seems to work as it did “before” [I will start referring to this as “B3.6” – before version 3.6]
The only thing that I cannot do now is get to the pages on the net as a user. They are on the server, but not visible to the net.

In reply to: 3.6 – new type of torture?To add to the madness;
I put back a 3.5x version I had downloaded a few days before the upgrade fiasco. I saved the entire folder that WP resided in. I have now removed the whole of 3.6, and reloaded the 3.5 folder.
Now, I try to go to mysite/wpfolder, and I get “file not found” Not only can I not get the welcome page, I can’t get page. I do get the theme header, so something from WP is showing, but not any of my pages.
There is an “index.php” file, so I tried going to
mysite/wpfolder/index.php, and it jumps back to mysite/wpfolder and file not found.
This is 3.5 which worked perfectly well before.
Can anyone shed some light on this? I don’t have much hair left, and I am pulling out what’s left.
