I found the reason. I had started to translate the templates by hand, modifying index.php, before I installed the mo-file. The i18n module could not find the expected string and could not handle this.

I think Podz and W3 are right, actually. The server defaults to US-ASCII and will send a header saying the feed is in US-ASCII unless PHP or .htaccess says utf-8. I have not looked through all the WP code, but I do not think it has to do with any posts being in other encoding. My WP installation has been running on utf-8 from day 1 and there should be no posts in other encodings.

    Additional question:

My MT MySQL database is gone, had a really bad web hosting service that had partial backups and a major server crash. I have the generated pages but no database. I have imported some texts manually. Is there any other way?

I am running 1.2.1. I have been looking at the fix at IoZBlog but have not implemented it yet. I thought it was mainly for outgoing trackbacks, that I know are working.

Before WP I was using MT for my blog, and I get the impression that WordPress is just half done. Much of the basic functionality has to be implemented by plugins and code modifications. OK, the plugin function is great and works like a dream, but I had expected basic functions such as trackback in and out, display of trackback and recent comments on the main page, and a lot of other things, to work “out of the box”.

I like the program, but it feels more like a beta testing release to me.

Yes, that is also a possibility, if everything else is utf-8 on the site. But my solution makes it fail safe, I think. I’ll stick to it anyway. ??

Any clues as to why I get Warning: fread(): Length parameter must be greater than 0. in /home/alltid/public_html/wp-includes/streams.php on line 107 when I try this?

My poEdit does no. Is there anything special I should do to make it work? I am editing sv_SE.po, saving it under temporary name sv_SE-ja.po, but no sv_SE-ja.mo shows up.
