Luckily I do not have to reset PP any more since it is working well now.

If all posts are published with private visibility, all you need to do is assign a “Read – Also these” exception for each Group/Category combination.

That’s what I’ve done, except for some public categories: I narrowed down the unauthenticated role to these categories by setting “these only”, so an unauthenticated user can only read from the public categories.
One should be warned however with regards to adding new users. If you forget to add the new user to one of the restricted groups, such user gains unrestricted read access to all your content.
On a more general note, I think you should create a new page and list basic use scenarios like mine, so people have some templates to follow or modify. That would be much clearer than the youtubes.

After several days of trial and error, hit or miss or wild-goose chase I’ve more or less managed to set up permissions according to the above mentioned description.
For the purpose of sharing posts between categories of divergent degrees of secrecy I had to stoop usin the”not these” operator. It’s all down to “only these” “also these” and “only these”
There are still behaviours I don’t understand. Settings made on the category page seem to take a different effect from nominally same settings made via the “Groups” menu.
For all my woes and moans I wish the author every success.

to clarify we dont use Retina Plugin to website images (attachment) but only for logo, so you dont need to worry about that!
Studiofolio image compression is something quite complex described here (very similar). Those are new advanced techniques: https://blog.netvlies.nl/design-interactie/retina-revolution/

Studiofolio simply compresses images instead of using 2 versions of the same image (except for the logo). I’d rather it used different versions for different receipients while at the same time compressing. Has somebody seen a theme doing that?

Your image on the front page is 5616×3744 px. It’s huge! Are you going to diplay it on a wall? No wonder it’s loading slowly. Besides, you are using the Studiofolio theme. I’m not sure, but the plugin doesn’t seem to work with dynamically rendered images or, at any rate, Studiofolio always appears to deliver the full-size image for any resizable content. I’m trying to explore some options in this thread. Your masonry portfolio available under “PHOTOGRAPHY” looks OK. I chcked the “moments of fatherhood” picture – it is sourced correctly from a an 830 px wide file, but I have no means of checking this on a retina. You can check to see if you have a file like this: https://alibibbo.com/wptest/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/MomentsofFatherhood23-830×[email protected]. As a matter of fact I am not sure if Studiofolio would display such a file in this context at all.
I have also opened an issue on undsgn, because the retina thing is poorly covered in their materials.
As regards your other problem, strange things may happen due to the sheer file size and memory contraints on your server.
I hope the the Author will shed some more light on it and correct my lame specutlations.
