Are you sure these are not trackbacks? In 1.5 trackbacks can be moderated as well… from the announcement for 1.5: “Well first we streamlined the comment management tools so ita€?s really easy to deal with hundreds or thousands of comments, trackbacks, and pingbacks at once…”
In other words, if you don’t want anything to show up as awaiting moderation, make sure you turn off “Allow Comments” and “Allow Pings” for every post.
